Cloud & 5G LIVE 2025: Eutelsat Group Executive Fireside Chat
At Cloud & 5G LIVE 2025, Ashutosh Pandey, VP of Project Management, Quality and Process at Eutelsat Group, took part in a fireside chat on sustainability strategies in cloud and 5G. He discussed the environmental impact of these technologies, key challenges, and how companies can innovate while staying sustainable.
The role of cloud and 5G in sustainability
Kicking off the discussion, Ashutosh defined cloud computing and 5G, emphasising their intertwined nature. Cloud computing, as pioneered by AWS, enables scalable computing services via the Internet, reducing the need for physical infrastructure.
Meanwhile, 5G provides faster speeds and lower latency, facilitating more efficient operations across industries.
According to Ashutosh, shifting from traditional on-premises hardware to cloud-based solutions could reduce carbon emissions by up to 80%.
Additionally, 5G networks, being more software-driven and cloud-compatible than previous generations, offer a significant sustainability advantage.
These technologies enable businesses to scale efficiently while consuming less energy.
Challenges in making 5G and cloud sustainable
Despite their potential, implementing sustainable practices in 5G and cloud is challenging. One major hurdle is the environmental impact of infrastructure, particularly the energy consumption of data centres, cooling systems, and telco networks.
“These technologies require a humongous amount of electricity,” Ashutosh noted, highlighting the need to manage power consumption effectively.
Companies must find ways to reduce energy use while maintaining high performance, a balancing act that requires continuous innovation.
Another key challenge is the presence of legacy systems, which can slow down the adoption of newer, more sustainable solutions. Many organisations struggle with transitioning to modern infrastructure due to complex, customised systems and internal inertia.
Innovating for a sustainable future
To ensure sustainability aligns with technological advancements, companies must integrate sustainability into their core strategy rather than treating it as a separate initiative.
Ashutosh provided examples of solutions that have successfully improved energy efficiency, such as edge computing, AI-enabled chipsets and hybrid energy sources.
One promising development is the use of solar-powered telecom sites, which generate their own energy and reduce reliance on traditional power grids. Similar efforts in cloud infrastructure include renewable energy-powered data centres and optimised cooling systems to lower electricity consumption.
Measurement also plays a crucial role.
“If you cannot measure, you cannot improve,” Ashutosh stated, advocating for strong KPIs aligned with global sustainability benchmarks like the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals.
Organisations must track their progress and integrate sustainability into their annual performance metrics to drive real change.
Collaboration and the road ahead
Partnerships within the tech ecosystem are essential to advancing sustainability. Ashutosh pointed out how industry leaders like Ericsson, Nokia, Amazon and Microsoft are working together to create shared cloud and 5G ecosystems, reducing redundancy and improving efficiency.
The future of sustainable cloud and 5G will be shaped by emerging technologies, including AI-driven optimisation, enhanced chipset efficiency and continued integration of renewable energy solutions.
However, organisations must be cautious with AI, ensuring its applications are targeted and effective rather than assuming it can solve all sustainability challenges.
Ashutosh concluded with advice for companies: sustainability should not be a box-ticking exercise but an integral part of business strategy.
By embedding sustainability into technological innovation and operational planning, organisations can future-proof their infrastructure while making a meaningful environmental impact.
