Cloud & 5G LIVE 2025: How Genpact Fuels Innovation
Rohit begins by taking the audience on a journey through the history of information exchange, from the days of telegrams and dial-up internet to today’s seamless real-time data sharing.
He highlights how fixed-line internet, once a slow and patience-testing process, evolved into broadband, making connectivity an expectation rather than a luxury.
He then shifts focus to mobile networks, explaining how connectivity advanced from early mobile internet (2.5G) to the launch of 3G, which promised - but initially struggled to deliver - faster mobile internet.
It wasn’t until the introduction of LTE in 2009 that mobile internet speeds caught up with expectations.
Now, with 5G, mobile networks are not just catching up with broadband - they are surpassing it in many cases.
“With 5G speed, we are seeing more speed than the fixed line,” Rohit explains, reinforcing how 5G is challenging traditional broadband networks.
The rise of the data era
The conversation then turns to the role of cloud computing in handling the increasing demands of data.
Rohit points out that before the cloud, powerful computing machines were accessible only to select organisations due to cost constraints.
Now, cloud infrastructure enables businesses to access on-demand processing power, making large-scale data analysis and real-time insights possible.
He emphasises that the synergy between cloud and 5G is driving this transformation.
“With elastic on-demand infrastructure, this high capacity machine became accessible to masses and hence processing large amounts of data became much easily available to everybody who wanted to process the data,” he noted.
The ability to generate and consume data in real-time has significant implications, particularly in artificial intelligence and automation.
“Right now, data is being produced as fast as it is consumed as well as, The consumer of the data gets all that data almost in real-time,” he says, describing the acceleration of AI, generative models and real-time analytics.
5G and cloud in action: real-world applications
Rohit illustrates the impact of cloud and 5G by exploring several industry use cases.
In the automotive sector, vehicle-to-vehicle and vehicle-to-infrastructure communication are enhancing road safety.
He cites statistics from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, showing that fatalities from traffic accidents in early 2024 dropped by 4.4% compared to 2023, thanks to interventions like anti-collision warnings.
“Now think about what if all the cars on the road are able to talk to each other?” he poses to the audience, explaining how real-time data sharing between vehicles and traffic infrastructure could reduce accidents and improve traffic efficiency.
He also delves into manufacturing, discussing how real-time 5G communication could enable just-in-time inventory management.
“Before 5G, the only possible thing was to lay cable and connect everything through, cables or Wi-Fi," he shares. "As we all know, you need a lot of repeaters in between.
Its range is not that high, and so on. But today we can actually install 5G and you can insert a SIM card on your machines and then it is ready to go.”
The road ahead for cloud and 5G
In the closing discussion, Rohit emphasises that we are still at the early stages of fully realising what cloud and 5G can achieve together.
He points to emerging applications in the Internet of Things (IoT), remote diagnostics for industries like oil drilling and even advancements in remote surgery.
"The sky’s the limit," he concludes, highlighting that these technologies will continue to drive new innovations across industries.
