Huawei positions new solutions to help carriers transform into tech companies as 5G user base surpasses 2.1 billion globally

Telecommunications operators worldwide face mounting pressure to extract returns from their substantial 5G network investments as subscriber growth begins to plateau in mature markets. The industry now stands at an inflection point where the convergence of advanced connectivity and AI presents both challenges and opportunities.

Global carriers have invested heavily in 5G infrastructure since 2019, yet many struggle to develop revenue streams beyond traditional connectivity. Meanwhile, AI demands are reshaping network requirements, with applications requiring more bandwidth, lower latency and enhanced processing capabilities at the edge.

Amid this rapid transformation, Huawei has gathered carriers, industry partners and opinion leaders at MWC Barcelona 2025 to explore how 5G networks and AI can support each other to unlock new growth opportunities for the telecommunications sector.

The company is demonstrating its AI-to-X approach, which encompasses services for consumers, businesses and homes, with its solutions aiming to help carriers expand into targeted domains and achieve business growth beyond traditional connectivity services.

At the centre of Huawei’s showcase at MWC is its new AI-Centric Network solution, designed to help carriers build infrastructure capable of meeting the demands of emerging AI applications while ensuring network performance.

The company is also promoting AI-powered operations and maintenance tools, which it claims can help carriers achieve L4 autonomous networks for intelligent network management.

These discussions come at a time when the telecommunications industry faces pressure to monetise 5G investments, with global 5G users exceeding 2.1 billion by the end of 2024.

Huawei 5G-Advanced deployments reach 200 cities as monetisation shifts to experience

By the conclusion of 2024, carriers working with Huawei had launched commercial 5G-Advanced packages for users in more than 200 cities worldwide. These enhanced networks provide services for specific use cases such as livestreaming, gaming and business travel.

The company reports it is working with carriers in China, Europe, the Middle East and Asia Pacific to develop experience-based monetisation models rather than focusing solely on connectivity.

This approach involves defining application scenarios, designing new offerings and building user bases around differentiated experiences. According to Huawei, the shift from connectivity to experience has improved user satisfaction while increasing carrier revenue.

The company’s AI-Centric Network solution helps carriers upgrade their ICT infrastructure to address new requirements for bandwidth, latency, coverage and operations brought by AI applications.

To facilitate carriers’ transformation from telecommunications service providers to technology companies, Huawei has introduced a three-layer technology architecture. This framework aims to guide carriers entering new business domains and accessing growth opportunities beyond traditional services.
