VP Fabrizio Campanale on the strategy behind Sunrise’s 5G SA rollout, 3G shutdown and how customer obsession drives every bold technological move

As Vice President of Entertainment, In-Home and One Assurance at Sunrise, Fabrizio Campanale leads a broad and critical portfolio that bridges cutting-edge innovation with day-to-day operational excellence. His responsibilities encompass the entire entertainment platform, from video infrastructure and head-end distribution to the in-home experience, including internet modems, WiFi and set-top boxes for over 1.5 million TV and 1.3 million broadband customers. Alongside these customer-facing services, he oversees all network operations and assurance processes, including the Network Operating Centre (NOC), incident and change management and field force teams. The dual remit gives him a unique, end-to-end perspective on how network performance translates directly into customer satisfaction.

Defining Fabrizio’s leadership is a philosophy of “pragmatic innovation,” a principle that has guided his supervision of some of Sunrise’s most ambitious strategic programmes. He has been instrumental in the governance of the nationwide rollout of 5G Standalone and the complex, high-stakes shutdown of the 3G network. These initiatives demand meticulous cross-functional alignment between technical and commercial divisions.

Sunrise Technology

His career journey began in the high-tech semiconductor industry, providing him with a deep technical foundation that remains a cornerstone of his leadership. Armed with a Master’s degree in Microelectronic Engineering, he started as a chip designer and architect, developing multimedia system-on-chip solutions for mobile devices and earning 16 EU and US patents. The experience at the component level gave him an appreciation for precision and engineering rigour that he later applied to broader systems. He transitioned into engineering leadership within the set-top box and telecom sectors, eventually joining UPC as Vice President of Engineering before its landmark merger with Sunrise in 2020. At UPC, he built a strong track record of successful product launches, including the one-gigabit modem and the first RDK set-top box in Switzerland.

Throughout his career, Fabrizio has supplemented his technical expertise with strategic leadership training, having attended executive programmes at INSEAD and Ashridge Business School. He describes himself as a pragmatic and resilient problem-solver who remains focused on delivery while keeping the bigger picture in mind. It reflects in his core principles: to focus on what ā€œreally moves the needleā€ for the business and to avoid over-engineering in favour of simple, reliable solutions that benefit the customer. His deep understanding of the full technology spectrum—from silicon chip design to the seamless in-home user experience—enables him to lead network operations and guide his teams through complex transformations, ensuring that every bold move is backed by strategic foresight and executed with precision
