O2 switches on 5G Standalone in Sheffield and nearby areas, offering faster speeds and stronger mobile coverage to residents and businesses

O2 has activated its 5G Standalone (5GSA) network in Sheffield, delivering faster mobile speeds, lower latency and more reliable coverage across the city and nearby towns.

The upgrade is part of the operator’s UK-wide rollout of 5GSA, now live in more than 500 locations. It forms part of O2’s Mobile Transformation Programme to improve mobile connectivity across the UK.

Around 580,000 people in Sheffield and surrounding areas including Chapeltown, Mexborough, Wombwell, Swinton, Dinnington and Wickersley can now access the improved mobile network. Stronger signal, improved capacity and faster data connections are now available outdoors across 90% of the area.

O2 confirms the new 5GSA service is included at no extra cost for customers with compatible devices.

Improved mobile access across the region

Unlike earlier versions of 5G that relied on 4G networks, 5GSA uses entirely new infrastructure. The upgrade delivers stronger signals and smoother service in more places. This improves mobile coverage for residents, commuters and visitors and supports new services powered by faster mobile data.

Local households and businesses gain a more stable mobile experience. Whether working from home, attending video calls or accessing cloud-based services, users can now rely on better connection quality and fewer interruptions.

Sectors across Sheffield stand to benefit. The upgrade supports flexible working, online learning and advances in industries such as manufacturing, creative services and healthcare. The lower latency and faster data speeds also prepare the city for digital developments in areas like transport and remote diagnostics.

Dr Robert Joyce, Director of Mobile Access Engineering at O2, says: “Our new 5G Standalone network is now live in Sheffield, providing an impressive upgrade for local people and businesses and creating new opportunities in and around the city.

“We are investing every single day to improve our mobile network and provide a more reliable experience for our customers, with these upgrades futureproofing our network and paving the way for exciting innovations that lie ahead.”

Part of O2’s UK-wide 5G programme

The Sheffield rollout is part of a national effort to bring 5GSA to cities, towns and rural communities. All 500 locations in the 5GSA programme, including Sheffield, now have at least 90% outdoor 5GSA coverage.

O2’s Mobile Transformation Plan includes expanding both 4G and 5G, alongside targeted deployments of small cells to ease network congestion in built-up areas. The operator is also addressing persistent coverage challenges in places like airports, railway lines, stadiums and motorways.

Investment into the infrastructure is designed to improve everyday connectivity and support long-term digital transformation. Stronger networks allow more devices to connect at once and handle more data traffic, improving user experience during busy periods and in crowded spaces.

Benefits for local people and future services

The wider region around Sheffield will also see the benefits. Locations including Conisbrough, Rossington, Bessacarr, Armthorpe, Bentley, Maltby, Hoyland and Thurnscoe are now part of the coverage area. People living and working in these places now gain access to faster mobile speeds and more consistent service.

This level of coverage enables users to stream, browse and work from more locations without relying on Wi-Fi. It also opens up possibilities for future services such as connected vehicles and smart city applications, which depend on stable, high-speed networks.

O2 describes the new service as its most advanced mobile network to date. By removing reliance on older systems and focusing on full 5G deployment, the company aims to set a new standard for mobile performance in the UK. Sheffield’s inclusion in this rollout means it is now better prepared for future innovation and digital growth.
