The UK Government commits US$687m to quantum computing, targeting telecom innovation, 6G infrastructure and cybersecurity through bold tech strategy

In a move that could redefine the digital landscape, the UK Government has pledged more than US$687m towards quantum computing over the next four years.

The investment forms a significant part of a broader US$920m commitment spanning the next decade, targeting the acceleration of quantum technologies across high-impact sectors, including telecommunications, healthcare, cybersecurity and energy.

The funding is central to the government’s ambitious Digital and Technologies Sector Plan, an initiative that aligns with its broader Industrial Strategy and Plan for Change. The goal is clear: to drive national renewal by backing next-generation technologies with transformative potential.

Quantum technology refers to the application of quantum mechanics and its principles, such as superposition and entanglement, in real-world systems. The properties unlock computational power and precision far beyond the reach of classical computing.

Key areas include:
  • Quantum computing – systems capable of solving complex problems at speeds traditional machines cannot match
  • Quantum communication – offering ultra-secure transmission through quantum key distribution
  • Quantum sensing – enabling highly accurate measurement tools, vital for sectors like defence, healthcare and infrastructure

"From quantum computers that could revolutionise drug discovery and make the NHS fit for the future to sustainable fuels that can make the UK a clean energy superpower, science and technology have a key part to play in delivering our modern Industrial Strategy to renew our country and support our Plan for Change.”

Microsoft has unveiled a quantum chip, Majorana 1, signalling its intent to bring quantum capabilities into the mainstream within years, not decades. Meanwhile, Amazon has entered the field with Ocelot, its first proprietary quantum chip.

The UK’s quantum investment is projected to support nearly 27,000 jobs and add US$3.1bn to GDP by 2034. Globally, the quantum market is expected to reach US$188bn by 2040, with the UK actively positioning itself as a leader in this emerging landscape.
