Australian Telecoms: Appian Finds 74% Face Data Gaps & Risks

Recent research by Appian has revealed ongoing data security and accessibility challenges faced by Australia’s telecommunications sector, despite significant investment in digital transformation. Insights from 234 industry professionals reveal a landscape where innovation and risk interweave and where the ability to protect sensitive data and ensure regulatory compliance remains a pressing concern.
The digital transformation paradox
The telecommunications industry in Australia has undergone a rapid digital overhaul, with nine out of ten organisations introducing new digital tools or initiatives in the past five years. However, digital progress has not come without complications. According to the study, 46% of respondents face organisational challenges in safeguarding sensitive data and maintaining compliance with data privacy regulations.
The situation is exacerbated by the fact that 74% of professionals report working with incomplete data, which undermines decision-making and the delivery of comprehensive customer service. The recent Telstra data breach, which affected 47,000 customers, starkly illustrates the potential consequences of inadequate data security, ranging from financial losses and regulatory penalties to reputational harm.
Luke Thomas, Area Vice President Asia Pacific and Japan at Appian, succinctly captured the dual nature of digital innovation:
“New digital tools and processes can be a double-edged sword. On the one hand, technology has revolutionised the telecommunications industry, with big data and AI driving innovation to enhance productivity and improve the customer experience. However, if implemented without a clear cyber-security strategy, digitisation and its accompanying data influx can expose organisations to additional vulnerability.”
Disproportionate burden compared to other sectors
The research indicates that telecommunications organisations are more acutely affected by data security concerns than other industries. While only 36% of professionals in the supply chain and energy sectors identified data security as a significant issue, the figure is markedly higher among telecoms professionals, highlighting a disproportionate burden on the industry.
The case for enterprise-grade security solutions
Appian advocates adopting robust, enterprise-grade security solutions to mitigate risks. Essential features include single sign-on authentication and real-time intrusion detection, both of which are critical for enhancing data privacy and ensuring compliance at every organisational level.
Appian Protect, for example, offers a tiered security approach, including end-to-end encryption, 24/7 monitoring and compliance with multiple industry standards such as SOC 2, HIPAA and PCI DSS.
Data accessibility: a barrier to operational excellence
Beyond security, data accessibility remains a significant obstacle. The survey found that 39% of respondents view data accessibility as an ongoing challenge, while 35% struggle to obtain the data required for daily operations.
The operational impact is substantial, affecting everything from troubleshooting and customer support to network optimisation.
Thomas highlighted the broader implications: “In an immediate sense, a lack of complete or accessible data can impact telecommunications workers’ ability to make informed decisions.
"A lack of Incomplete or accessible data has wider implications in their abilities to troubleshoot issues, provide reliable customer support, or optimise network performance. This can have a detrimental effect on an organisation’s workforce, negatively impacting employee experience and morale. It’s not a great image for the telecommunications industry, which is in the business of connecting people.”
Nearly half (49%) of respondents indicated that incomplete data hampers their ability to complete reporting and analysis, while 29% reported difficulties with budgeting and planning.
Thomas noted: “This lack of data visibility limits an organisation’s ability to innovate, respond to market demands and maintain competitive advantage, as decisions made without reliable information are inherently riskier and often less effective. This creates a ripple effect, slowing down processes, increasing operational costs and ultimately impacting the bottom line.”
Unified platforms and AI: the path forward
To address the challenges, Appian recommends the implementation of modern process orchestration platforms, enhanced by data fabric and artificial intelligence.
Such solutions unify and secure data across disparate systems, offering precise access control and supporting compliance and operational efficiency. Appian’s data fabric, for example, enables secure, real-time access to enterprise data, enforces access controls and automates data orchestration and preparation for analytics and AI applications.
Despite the opportunities, more than half (54%) of Australian telecommunications professionals surveyed said they rarely or never use AI in their current roles, signalling a significant opportunity for sector-wide improvement.
Thomas concluded, “AI and advanced data management tools can be transformative for the complex data security and data access challenges that the telecoms industry is facing.
"Real-time threat detection and response and streamlined, connected data help foster a more responsive and resilient data ecosystem that can revolutionise workers’ lives, boost operational efficiencies and benefit the end customer.”
Australian telecommunications providers stand at a crossroads. While digital transformation has unlocked new possibilities, it has introduced complex data security and access challenges.
