DE-CIX Sets 25 Tbit/s Record in Global Data Throughput

DE-CIX, the world’s leading Internet Exchange (IX) operator, has achieved a significant milestone by setting a new global data throughput record of 25 terabits per second (Tbit/s).
The unprecedented peak in peering traffic was recorded on 8 April at 15:10 Eastern (19:10 UTC), highlighting the accelerating demand for digital content and resilient interconnection infrastructure.
The record throughput is equivalent to streaming nearly 14 million TikTok videos simultaneously, a striking illustration of the growing digital appetite worldwide.
Since 2020, DE-CIX has experienced a 130% increase in global peering traffic, making the event a technical achievement and a reflection of the world’s evolving digital landscape.
Multi-regional surge drives unprecedented throughput
Unlike previous peaks, which often stemmed from single regional surges, the 25 Tbit/s milestone resulted from strong, simultaneous throughput across multiple regions.
Data centres in Frankfurt, Dallas, Madrid and Istanbul all contributed to the increase, marking a departure from regionally isolated peaks seen in previous years.
Dr. Thomas King, Chief Technology Officer at DE-CIX, attributed the record to a convergence of high-impact digital events, stating “The peak last night is the result of higher than usual data traffic from the confluence of multiple events, including the live streaming of sport and software updates, alongside the usual consumption of digital content and services.
“This peak demonstrates the power of peering, the glue that binds together the different networks – including networks that supply video content, software downloads and mobile Internet – that make up the Internet.”
Global reach and infrastructure at scale
DE-CIX operates a globally distributed platform of Internet Exchanges spanning 60+ locations across Europe, North and South America, Africa, the Middle East and Asia.
With services accessible from more than 600 cities, DE-CIX interconnects more than 4,000 networks, including carriers, ISPs, content providers and enterprise networks across 100+ countries.
The operator’s flagship site, DE-CIX Frankfurt, remains one of the largest IXs globally. It boasts nearly 1,100 connected networks. It handles more than 45 exabytes of data per year. In 2024 alone, the total traffic across DE-CIX’s exchanges reached 68 exabytes, demonstrating a sustained upward trend in digital activity.
30 years of industry leadership and innovation
As DE-CIX celebrates its 30th anniversary in 2025, the record-breaking event reinforces its legacy as a global pioneer in Internet infrastructure.
Since launching its first IX in Frankfurt in 1995, the organisation has played a defining role in the growth and regulation of the Internet through its involvement in global standards bodies such as the Internet Engineering Task Force (IETF).
Today, DE-CIX operates critical IT infrastructure and is a strategic enabler for cloud adoption, content delivery and digital transformation across industries.
A vision for seamless, secure global interconnection
Beyond raw performance, DE-CIX’s interconnection solutions provide enterprises with secure, neutral and low-latency environments for exchanging data.
Its platforms support a wide array of services including peering, cloud interconnects and direct enterprise connectivity, enabling seamless communication between networks on a global scale.
With a diverse workforce of nearly 250 professionals representing more than 35 nationalities, DE-CIX continues to expand its global presence while upholding its mission: to facilitate fast, secure and efficient data exchange between people, businesses and institutions worldwide.
