Dell’s single-server solution for Open RAN delivers breakthrough performance, lowers TCO and enables AI at the edge for modern telecom networks

Dell Technologies has announced the launch of the new Dell PowerEdge XR8720t server, a system engineered to transform edge and telecommunications infrastructure fundamentally.

The server delivers unprecedented performance and connectivity, establishing a new industry benchmark specifically for Open RAN and Cloud RAN deployments. It offers enhanced connectivity and efficiency, simplifying the complex transformations necessary at the network edge for telecom operators and enterprise organisations alike.

Overcoming traditional edge and cloud RAN barriers

Historically, multi-server deployments have impeded the widespread adoption of Cloud RAN and advanced edge computing.

Such architectures burden organisations with significant costs, increase operational complexity and substantial space and power demands.

These inefficiencies and inherent scalability limitations make it exceptionally difficult to meet the real-time performance requirements of next-generation, data-intensive applications.

The Dell PowerEdge XR8720t directly confronts and eliminates these barriers. It arrives as the industry’s first single-server solution engineered for Cloud RAN, offering a streamlined infrastructure that boosts both performance and efficiency.

For modern network and edge deployments, the server’s design translates into a significantly reduced total cost of ownership (TCO).

Dennis Hoffman, Senior Vice President at Dell Technologies

“The Dell PowerEdge XR8720t represents a significant step forward in telecom and edge infrastructure innovation,” states Dennis Hoffman, Senior Vice President at Dell Technologies. “As a first platform of its kind, it is engineered to meet the rigorous demands of Open RAN and Cloud RAN deployments while delivering exceptional performance and scalability for edge workloads.

"The server’s breakthrough design allows organisations to consolidate workloads that once required multiple systems, simplifying infrastructure and paving the way for more powerful, efficient and AI-ready networks.”

A new era of performance with single-server consolidation

The PowerEdge XR8720t compute sled integrates seamlessly into the Dell PowerEdge XR8000 platform. It has been purpose-built to address the performance challenges that have previously hindered infrastructure adoption in demanding environments.

With its enhanced processing power and increased connectivity, the server enables robust support for high-demand applications while simplifying deployments and lowering operational costs.

The PowerEdge XR8720t effectively closes the performance gaps between Cloud RAN and traditional RAN architectures. It provides more than double the processing power compared to the previous generation, supporting up to 72 cores and 24 SFP28 connectivity ports within a compact 2U configuration.

Consolidating workloads onto a single server dramatically reduces deployment times, operational complexity and ongoing maintenance requirements when compared to cumbersome multi-server architectures.

Advanced features tailored for telecom networks

Powered by the Intel Xeon 6 System on Chip (SoC) with integrated Intel vRAN Boost, the server offers exceptional processing capability. Intel Ethernet E830-XXVDA8F networking technology incorporates a hardware-enhanced timing follower, which ensures high-precision timing synchronisation across the network.

With full support for Precision Time Protocol (PTP), PTM and SyncE, the XR8720t delivers the critical capabilities required for demanding Cloud RAN workloads. By explicit design, its compact 430mm depth is for space-constrained cell site deployments, while its formidable port density (24x SFP28) and network bandwidth (600 GbE) meet the rigorous demands of modern telecommunications.

Unlocking AI capabilities and future-proofing operations

The server’s architecture unlocks powerful AI capabilities for CPU-based workloads, making advanced edge AI use cases a reality.

Applications such as agentic AI, real-time analytics and machine learning (ML)-driven operations become possible, helping to future-proof network operations.

The flexible configuration allows for potential support for GPUs upon request, further extending its AI potential for more intensive tasks.

Enterprises across telecom, retail, defence and manufacturing will find the server invaluable for driving AI, ML and other compute-intensive workloads, as well as for precision-driven tasks that require advanced synchronisation.

Engineered for resilience in demanding environments

Engineered for extreme conditions, the PowerEdge XR8720t operates reliably in temperatures ranging from -5°C to 55°C. Its modular design allows for easy maintenance and upgrades, regardless of its operating environment.

As a Network Equipment-Building System (NEBS) Level 3-compliant server, it features front-accessible I/O, which significantly reduces downtime and operational complexity.

The system is built for extended durability and reliability, making it ideal for telecom, edge and military applications. Furthermore, an intelligent cooling design optimises thermal performance even in tightly confined spaces.
