EE emerges as the UK’s first major broadband provider to include WiFi 7 technology as standard, boosting in-home connectivity on every full fibre plan

EE introduces new full fibre broadband plans which now include WiFi 7 hubs as standard, setting a new benchmark for in-home internet performance.

The move positions EE as the first major UK provider to equip every full fibre customer with next-generation WiFi 7 hardware, delivering stronger, more reliable connections throughout the home.

Luciano Oliveira, Director of Product, Home and TV at EE, says: “EE is the first major provider in the UK to offer WiFi 7 smart hub technology as standard across all Full Fibre plans.

“By pairing best-in-class hardware with advanced features like WiFi Intelligence and AI-enabled security, our customers get the most reliable, high-performance connection in every room of their home – whether streaming, working, gaming or staying connected with family – and that's why more people are choosing EE.”

Reliability takes priority over speed

The upgrade aligns with consumer demand.  According to research commissioned by EE, almost half of UK households (44%) now value reliable broadband coverage across their homes more than outright speed or cost.

The findings show a shift in priorities, with users increasingly seeking consistent performance throughout their living spaces, rather than top-line speeds on paper.

However, challenges remain.

One in three homes still face at least one so-called Wi-Fi 'dead zone' – an area within the house where connectivity drops out. The introduction of WiFi 7 aims to reduce the issue, making full coverage more achievable across a variety of household layouts.

EE’s latest plans also incorporate a suite of support services to complement the hardware.

These include WiFi Intelligence, which uses live network performance data to maintain optimal connectivity, WiFi Optimiser, which fine-tunes performance depending on usage type and Advanced WiFi Controls.

Hardware that adapts to broadband speed

With the rollout, EE debuts two new devices: the Smart Hub 7 Plus and the WiFi Extender 7 Plus. These are provided based on the speed of the customer’s plan.

For plans offering up to 1Gbps, customers receive the Smart Hub 7 Plus, a dual-band router capable of handling speeds up to 1Gbps.

The model delivers up to 30% faster throughput than EE’s previous Smart Hub 6 Plus, supporting more connected devices and lowering latency during data-heavy tasks like streaming and gaming.

Customers on these plans also have the option to add the WiFi Extender 7 Plus for broader in-home coverage.

For even faster speed, the Smart Hub 7 Pro supports tri-band technology, allowing consistent speeds above 1Gbps and maintaining performance across more demanding network environments.

Features designed to improve home connectivity

Beyond hardware, EE’s new packages focus on smart, automated features that improve customer experience without requiring manual input.

WiFi Intelligence stands out among them, operating in the background to keep users connected to the most efficient hub or extender channel. As a result, it ensures the network is always performing at its best, regardless of the number of devices in use.

WiFi Optimiser, included in selected plans, automatically adjusts the connection depending on whether the user is streaming, working remotely or gaming, reducing interruptions like lag and buffering.

Security is another area EE addresses.

Several plans include Advanced Web Protect, an AI-enabled feature that blocks malicious websites before they reach user devices.

Additional layers of protection are available through Cyber Security powered by Norton.

The service offers dark web monitoring, password management and social media protection for up to 15 devices, both in and outside the home.

Testing faster broadband for the future

EE has also confirmed its involvement in the Openreach Full Fibre pilot, which tests future broadband capabilities using XGSPON technology.

The trial explores delivering download speeds of up to 8.5Gbps over full fibre, offering insights that may shape upcoming broadband services.

The pilot positions EE to play a role in the next phase of UK broadband development.
