Ericsson had upgraded its membership status to Gold, marking a significant step in its commitment to shaping the future of cloud-native networking technologies
Ericsson joins CNCF as a Gold Member to drive 5G and 6G innovation. More than 70% of telcos cite cloud native tech as key to future network scalability

At KubeCon + CloudNativeCon Europe, the Cloud Native Computing Foundation (CNCF) announced that Ericsson had upgraded its membership status to Gold, marking a significant step in its commitment to shaping the future of cloud-native networking technologies in the telecommunications sector.

The move positions Ericsson among a select group of organisations leading efforts to integrate cloud-native architecture into telecom networks, with a specific focus on driving the evolution of 5G and 6G infrastructure.

As telecoms operators increasingly turn to open-source technologies to modernise their networks, Ericsson's enhanced participation in CNCF signals its dedication to collaborative, innovation and long-term industry transformation.

A strategic commitment to cloud-native telco infrastructure

Ericsson's decision to upgrade its CNCF membership highlights its broader strategy to embed cloud-native principles across the telecom stack, from core to edge. By actively engaging with the CNCF and its open-source community, Ericsson aims to influence the development of critical projects aligned with telecom needs.

Phil Robb, Head of Ericsson Software Technology

Phil Robb, Head of Ericsson Software Technology, stated: "Cloud-native technology is essential for the future of telco networks, enabling greater scalability, flexibility and operational efficiency.

"Upgrading to a CNCF Gold Membership allows us to take a more active role in shaping the open source ecosystem that underpins 5G and 6G.

"The move strengthens our ability to engage in key cloud-native developments, ensuring they align with the needs of modern telecom infrastructure. We look forward to deeper collaboration with CNCF and its community to drive meaningful innovation."

Driving key contributions to the open-source ecosystem

Ericsson is already a recognised contributor to several critical CNCF and open-source initiatives. One of its notable efforts is the Metal3 project, which enhances bare-metal provisioning in Kubernetes—a fundamental capability for managing infrastructure in 5G core and radio access networks.

It further plays a pivotal role in advancing service mesh technologies, including Istio and Envoy, to meet the stringent performance, scalability and security demands of cloud-native telecom applications. These contributions ensure that evolving cloud-native platforms are tailored for telecom-grade reliability and throughput.

Reinforcing security across the telecom cloud stack

Security remains central to Ericsson's cloud-native strategy. The company collaborates closely with CNCF and the Open Source Security Foundation (OpenSSF) to define and implement security baselines that meet industry-wide standards. Ericsson also applies best practices from the Secure Software Development Framework (SSDF) to strengthen the resilience of cloud-native systems.

The proactive security posture enhances trust across telecom deployments and sets a benchmark for how cloud-native telecom services should be built and maintained.

Chris Aniszczyk, CTO at CNCF

Chris Aniszczyk, CTO at CNCF, stated: "Ericsson's decision to invest in a CNCF gold membership underscores the growing role of cloud-native technologies in the telco industry.

"Their deeper investment will strengthen the ecosystem, drive advancements in cloud-native networking and help shape the evolution of cloud-native telco infrastructure. We look forward to their continued contributions and collaboration."

Accelerating open standards and global interoperability

By joining the CNCF at the Gold level, Ericsson enhances its ability to influence the future of cloud-native networking. As part of a broader community of telecom and cloud leaders, it is contributing to the standardisation of open architectures, which are essential for global interoperability, vendor-neutral frameworks and faster service innovation.

Cloud Native Computing Foundation (CNCF) announced that Ericsson had upgraded its membership status to Gold

With 5G deployment scaling globally and 6G development on the horizon, Ericsson's strengthened engagement with CNCF offers a path to accelerate transformation and build more adaptive, intelligent telecom networks.

As telco operators grapple with complex digital transformation initiatives, Ericsson's elevation to CNCF Gold Member provides industry assurance of its commitment to delivering secure, scalable and efficient infrastructure solutions. Through continued collaboration, active contribution and leadership in cloud-native communities, Ericsson is helping to define what the next generation of telecom will look like.

By aligning its technology roadmap with the cloud-native movement, Ericsson is not only preparing networks for tomorrow's demands but reinforcing its role as a catalyst for innovation across the global telecom ecosystem.
