Ericsson, with IDA Ireland support, invests US$227m to enhance 5G network automation at Athlone, advancing global CSP innovation and efficiency

Ericsson has unveiled a substantial US$227m research, development and innovation (RD&I) investment over three years at its Athlone facility in central Ireland. The initiative, supported by the Irish Government through IDA Ireland, aims to significantly strengthen Ericsson's global leadership in high-performing, programmable networks.

The latest move reflects a strategic focus on advancing open network management and automation capabilities, with the aim of enabling communications service providers (CSPs) to optimise operational efficiency and deliver differentiated 5G Standalone (SA) offerings to a global market.

Open, programmable, multi-vendor networks at the core

The investment will further develop Ericsson's Intelligent Automation Platform (EIAP), a critical enabler of automation across 4G and 5G Radio Access Networks (RAN). Primarily designed at the Athlone site, EIAP is an open, vendor-agnostic platform that supports a wide range of technologies and applications, known as rApps, which facilitate the intelligent management of RAN infrastructure.

The platform provides an interoperable environment for developing and deploying rApps from any vendor, offering CSPs the flexibility to integrate innovations from across a growing ecosystem of technology partners. Through programmable, disaggregated network architecture, the goal is to accelerate RAN innovation cycles, drive collaboration and improve network outcomes.

Integrating AI, ML and advanced analytics

A key component of the investment is the integration of Artificial Intelligence (AI), Machine Learning (ML) and advanced analytics into network automation. These technologies will be instrumental in enabling autonomous network operations, enhancing performance and reducing operational expenditures for CSPs.

Denis Dullea, Head of Ericsson's Athlone site and Network Management Engineering Unit

Denis Dullea, Head of Ericsson's Athlone site and Network Management Engineering Unit, stated: "Ericsson has a long history and deep roots in Ireland spanning more than 50 years.

"The US$227m investment, supported by the IDA and Irish government, is a testament to our commitment to Ireland and confidence in our exceptional talent here. By delivering on this cutting-edge project, we're both investing in Ireland's future and empowering mobile operators worldwide."

Ireland's Minister for Enterprise, Trade and Employment, Peter Burke TD

Ireland's Minister for Enterprise, Trade and Employment, Peter Burke TD, welcomed the announcement: "Ericsson's US$227m announcement at their Athlone facility is fantastic news.

"The innovative R&D project, which will span a duration of three years, will improve efficiency in 5G networks globally."

He also recognised the company's legacy in the region: "Ericsson has been established in Ireland for decades, with the Athlone facility a significant employer and an integral part of the fabric of the community for over 50 years."

Michael Lohan, CEO of IDA Ireland

Michael Lohan, CEO of IDA Ireland, commented: "Ericsson's ambitious programme is strongly aligned with the key growth drivers of IDA Ireland's new strategy. The investment strengthens the long-term legacy of Ericsson in Ireland, building on the success of past investments spanning more than 60 years."

A strategic investment in regional and global growth

Ericsson currently employs more than 1,300 people in Ireland, with the Athlone facility serving as a centre of excellence for intelligent network management. The relationship between Ericsson and IDA Ireland dates back to 1974 when the IDA facilitated Ericsson's entry into the region by providing the current site.

The latest RD&I programme reflects a deep, continuing commitment to regional development, local talent and the advancement of global telecommunications infrastructure. It reinforces Ireland's position as a strategic location for cutting-edge technology investment and innovation.

As CSPs worldwide look to scale their 5G offerings and explore new avenues for automation, Ericsson's expanded capabilities in Athlone aim to play a central role in defining the future of programmable networks.
