Vodafone secures a place on CDP's 2024 'A List', joining 346 global firms with over 80% disclosure scores for climate action and net zero commitment

Vodafone has again demonstrated environmental leadership, earning a prestigious place on CDP's 2024 'A List'. The recognition, widely regarded as one of the highest benchmarks for sustainability reporting, reinforces Vodafone's standing as a frontrunner in the journey towards net zero.

The ranking is based on responses to CDP's annual climate change questionnaire, which evaluates how corporations reduce greenhouse gas emissions, manage climate-related risks and support the transition to a low-carbon economy.

A testament to strategy and transparency

Vodafone's recognition is not just a badge of honour—it is a formal endorsement of the company's long-term climate strategy and its commitment to transparently reporting environmental progress.

In 2024, CDP introduced a more rigorous framework, updating its questionnaire to increase data granularity and align more closely with international standards. One of the key changes included the introduction of 'essential criteria'.

To be considered for the 'A List', organisations must achieve a minimum score of 80% across all disclosure categories—raising the bar significantly from previous years.

Andrea McCormick, Vodafone's Global Environment Lead, stated: "CDP raised the bar in 2024, so we are delighted to make this announcement and to celebrate the work of climate action superstars across our global business who have collectively achieved this result."

Strong leadership, clear goals

Joakim Reiter, Chief External & Corporate Affairs Officer, acknowledged the importance of the accolade in affirming the group's broader sustainability commitments.

"Our inclusion in the CDP 'A List' reflects our ongoing strategy to address climate change, but equally our commitment to transparency on progress," Reiter commented. "This includes the publication of our first Climate Transition Plan in 2024, setting out the actions we will take to drive progress towards net zero during FY25-27."

Vodafone has pledged to achieve net zero carbon emissions across its full value chain by 2040. As an interim target, the group aims to halve emissions by 2030. Efforts to date have included a transition to renewable energy and efficiency improvements across infrastructure and operations.

Understanding CDP's influence

CDP (formerly known as the Carbon Disclosure Project) is a London-founded non-profit organisation that enables companies, cities and governments to disclose and manage their environmental impacts. It operates the world's only independent disclosure platform for corporate environmental data and plays a pivotal role in shaping ESG investment strategies.

CDP's data is widely used by more than 700 institutional investors, whose portfolios represent approximately one-quarter of global financial assets. In 2024 alone, more than 24,000 companies submitted disclosures—accounting for two-thirds of global market capitalisation.

CDP now evaluates more than carbon emissions, expanding its focus to encompass broader issues such as deforestation, water security and plastic pollution.

The scoring system behind the 'A List'

Companies submitting environmental disclosures to CDP are scored from A to D—based on the quality of their reporting, governance around environmental issues and climate leadership. Those failing to provide sufficient data receive an 'F'.

The 'A List' represents a small cohort of leading businesses that have demonstrated best practices in transparency and action. To meet the revised 2024 criteria, companies were required to show more detailed metrics, robust risk assessment processes and clear alignment with global climate targets.

Signalling a broader trend towards accountability

Vodafone's achievement is part of a growing movement among corporates to address climate concerns more seriously. With stakeholders increasingly expecting more than just promises, sustainability performance is now a critical area of scrutiny for investors, partners and customers alike.

Kim Hurst, Global Lead for Supply Chain Sustainability at Vodafone noted:

"We're leading the charge on our environmental agenda and executing against the robust climate transition that we published this time last year."

As standards continue to rise and corporate environmental data becomes more central to investment decisions, Vodafone's leadership offers a compelling example of how strategy, action and transparency can combine to deliver meaningful impact.
