iBASIS acquires Telstra International’s wholesale voice and messaging assets, boosting its Asia-Pacific footprint and global wholesale telecom services

iBASIS, a global communications solutions provider, has announced a significant strategic move to broaden its footprint across the Asia-Pacific region by acquiring wholesale voice, mobile and messaging assets from Telstra International. The acquisition firmly advances iBASIS’s position as a consolidator in the international wholesale telecom market and reinforces its status as the preferred partner for Tier One domestic carriers.

Strengthening global presence and market position

The asset sale and purchase agreement, signed with Telstra, covers Telstra International’s wholesale voice, IPX and messaging customer contracts, subject to regulatory approval and expected to close before the end of 2025.

The deal marks a significant milestone for iBASIS, expanding its commercial footprint through reinforced presence in Hong Kong and Singapore as well as establishing new operations within Australia and New Zealand.

Significantly, the transaction grants iBASIS exclusive rights to provide international wholesale voice services for Digicel Pacific. It includes territories such as Papua New Guinea, Fiji, Samoa, Tonga, Vanuatu and Nauru: key markets in the South Pacific with growing telecommunications demands.

Accelerating growth through consolidation

Patrick George, CEO of iBASIS

Patrick George, CEO of iBASIS, comments: “We are extremely proud to partner with Telstra. This marks a significant milestone in iBASIS’ ongoing consolidation strategy.

"This transaction accelerates our growth trajectory and strengthens our unique leadership position as a global wholesale player.

"It validates the relevance of our model as an independent specialist in global wholesale communications, built on high-performing voice and mobile platforms. It expands our reach and presence in the APAC region.”

For iBASIS, already a Tier One IPX vendor operating across more than 28 locations worldwide and serving over 1,000 customers, the acquisition embodies its strategic ambition to consolidate the wholesale market through targeted expansion.

The addition of Telstra International’s assets enhances its portfolio with high-value customer contracts and an experienced international team, ensuring continuity for existing clients.

Roary Stasko, CEO of Telstra International, explained the rationale behind the deal: “This long-term partnership with iBASIS offers a strategic opportunity to strengthen our ability to compete globally, while ensuring continuity and quality for our international voice customers.

We have full confidence in iBASIS to deliver seamless continuity for our wholesale and retail customers, backed by their proven track record in service delivery and global expertise.”

The divestment aligns with Telstra’s focus on core businesses, while allowing iBASIS to build scale and capability in wholesale voice and messaging services, a sector undergoing rapid evolution, leveraged by increased mobile data, 5G roaming and IoT growth.

Implications for telecommunications and wholesale markets

The acquisition considerably advances the consolidation trend in the international wholesale telecom sector, a market characterised by increasing complexity and demand for scalable, resilient communications infrastructure.

With Asia-Pacific experiencing rapid digital transformation and the roll-out of 5G networks, iBASIS’s augmented presence supports operators and digital players by optimising global connectivity, quality of service and security.
