OpenAI introduces Instant Checkout that allows users to purchase within ChatGPT
OpenAI’s Instant Checkout could change retail, but telcos and networks will have to support AI-driven commerce with low-latency, secure connections

AI systems are evolving rapidly, and OpenAI has now added commerce capabilities directly into ChatGPT.

The new feature, Instant Checkout, enables users to complete purchases without leaving the chat interface, signalling a potential shift in digital transactions and customer engagement for telcos and network service providers supporting AI-enabled applications.

Initially available to US users across ChatGPT’s Plus, Pro, and free tiers, Instant Checkout leverages AI as a transactional agent, providing a seamless bridge between users and merchants.

How instant checkout works

The system launches in partnership with Etsy and Shopify, beginning with products from Etsy before expanding to over one million merchants via Shopify.

Notable brands such as Glossier, SKIMS, and Vuori are preparing to integrate their offerings into the platform.

When a user asks a shopping-related question, ChatGPT displays products ranked by relevance. If a product supports Instant Checkout, the user can tap to buy, confirm order details, and complete the transaction entirely within the chat.

OpenAI reports that 700 million people use ChatGPT weekly for tasks including product discovery.

“Orders, payments and fulfilment are handled by the merchant using their existing systems," the company states.

"ChatGPT simply acts as the user’s AI agent – securely passing information between user and merchant, just like a digital personal shopper would.”

For telecommunications providers, it demonstrates the growing demand for low-latency, high-reliability network infrastructure capable of supporting AI-driven, real-time commerce interactions at scale.

The role of stripe and the agentic commerce protocol

The underlying technology powering Instant Checkout was developed in partnership with Stripe, whose payment processing capabilities integrate with OpenAI’s Agentic Commerce Protocol.

The protocol establishes a standard for AI-facilitated transactions, allowing merchants to retain control over payment processing and customer relationships while enabling AI platforms to handle the user interface.

When a purchase occurs, ChatGPT forwards order information to the merchant’s backend through the protocol. The merchant then accepts or declines the order, processes payment via their existing provider, and manages fulfilment.

Merchants already using Stripe can activate the system with a single line of code, while those with alternative payment processors can participate via Stripe’s Shared Payment Token API or the Delegated Payments specification within the protocol.

Will Gaybrick, President of Technology and Business at Stripe, explains: “Stripe is building the economic infrastructure for AI. That means re-architecting today’s commerce systems and creating new AI-powered experiences for billions of people.”

The service carries no cost for users, and product pricing remains unaffected.

Implications for telecommunications providers

For telcos, Instant Checkout represents both a technical and strategic opportunity.

AI-driven commerce relies on reliable, low-latency connections and secure transaction pathways, highlighting the need for networks that can support real-time interactions between millions of users and merchants.

OpenAI ensures user security and privacy. Payment tokens are encrypted and authorised only for specific amounts to specific merchants, needing user permission. Data sharing is strictly limited to the information required to complete orders.

OpenAI is keen to be transparent about the way products are ranked on its platform.

Instant Checkout availability does not influence product ranking in search results, with product results remaining organic and unsponsored, ranked purely on relevance to the user," the firm states.

Future plans and expansion

Currently, Instant Checkout supports individual item purchases, but OpenAI plans to introduce shopping carts for multiple items and expand merchant participation and geographic coverage.

Technical documentation is publicly available and applications for merchant participation are now open.

“We’re proud to power Instant Checkout in ChatGPT and co-develop the Agentic Commerce Protocol to help businesses and AI platforms build the future of commerce.”

Will Gaybrick, President of Technology and Business at Stripe

For telecommunications providers, supporting AI platforms like ChatGPT with high-speed, low-latency networks and secure cloud infrastructure will be critical as real-time commerce and digital personal shopping experiences grow in scale and complexity.
