Digital Realty’s new Accra data centre and LINX IXP launch boost low-latency connectivity in Ghana, strengthening West Africa’s digital infrastructure

Digital Realty is nearing completion of its ACR2 data centre in Accra, Ghana, strategically positioned near key submarine cable landing points.

The milestone closely follows the announcement of LINX Accra, a new Internet Exchange Point (IXP) set to go live in the coming weeks. Together, these developments aim to reshape digital infrastructure in West Africa.

Advancing interconnection in Ghana

Digital Realty’s ACR2 facility represents a significant step forward in expanding robust digital infrastructure across the region.

Located in Accra’s high-connectivity corridor, the data centre benefits from its proximity to six major subsea cable systems, positioning it as a gateway for low-latency, high-resilience connectivity.

Simultaneously, the London Internet Exchange (LINX) is preparing to launch its third African IXP—LINX Accra—following the 2023 rollouts in Nairobi and Mombasa in 2025.

The new exchange forms part of LINX’s strategic expansion across Africa, offering scalable, carrier-neutral interconnection solutions to support the region’s evolving digital ecosystem.

“We are excited to be embarking on this new journey with Digital Realty in Ghana,” said Nurani Nimpuno, Head of Global Engagement for LINX. “We have strong relations with our partners across our LINX hubs in the UK, US and Kenya, so I’m confident this relationship extension will succeed.”

Ghana: A digital hub in West Africa

Ghana has emerged as one of the most internationally connected countries in Africa. With multiple submarine cable systems, it has become a key destination for global connectivity providers. According to the African Center for Economic Transformation (ACET), Ghana’s digital economy projection is US$5bn by 2030.

Recognising the potential, LINX recently partnered with the Internet Society Ghana Chapter (ISOC Ghana). The partnership aims to advance internet access and resilience across West Africa, supporting local businesses and governments’ digital aspirations.

Joseph Koranteng, Managing Director of Digital Realty in Ghana, stated, “We’re pleased to be welcoming LINX to our new data centre in Ghana, a key milestone as we continue to strengthen interconnection across Africa.

“As demand for low-latency connectivity grows, this collaboration will play a critical role in helping to shape the region’s digital future by enabling greater access, resilience and integration with the global internet fabric.”

Building on a trusted global partnership

Digital Realty and LINX share a longstanding partnership that began in key interconnection hubs like London and North Virginia. The collaboration now extends to Africa, with LINX Nairobi launched in 2023 and the LINX Mombasa exchange launched earlier this year. Both are hosted in facilities owned by iColo, a Digital Realty company.

LINX Accra will function as a multi-site, interconnected and resilient fabric. It will offer low-latency services, including peering, supporting ISPs, content providers, cloud platforms and enterprise networks that seek a neutral and efficient exchange environment.

Supporting the continent’s digital ambitions

Digital Realty continues to expand its presence across the continent, currently operating in Kenya, Mozambique, Nigeria and South Africa. Its infrastructure supports local innovation, cloud adoption and global integration, reinforcing its mission to empower Africa’s digital economy.

Further cementing its leadership, Digital Realty was recently named the number one data centre provider in Africa and Europe on Cloudscene’s 2024–2025 Data Centre Ecosystem Leaderboard.

The recognition reflects its efforts to deliver a unified, global data centre platform that supports scale, flexibility and security.

In April 2025, it launched its HER1 facility in Crete, designed to boost connectivity across the Mediterranean and act as a strategic bridge between Europe and Africa.

A platform for growth

With the launch of LINX Accra and the commissioning of ACR2, Ghana stands at the centre of a broader regional transformation.

For telecom providers, cloud platforms and digital businesses, these investments represent a timely opportunity to strengthen their footprint in West Africa through scalable, carrier-neutral infrastructure.

As connectivity demands rise across the continent, partnerships such as that between Digital Realty and LINX will play a critical role in building Africa’s internet backbone, which is open, resilient and ready for the next wave of digital growth.
