MHP and AWS Launch New DIN SPEC for EV Battery Twins

The telecommunications industry increasingly benefits from advancements in digital twin technology.
The launch of the new DIN SPEC standard for digital twins of electric vehicle (EV) batteries highlights the sector’s drive toward interoperability and innovation.
MHP, a management and IT consultancy, together with Amazon Web Services (AWS) and another partner, has developed the DIN SAE SPEC 91487:2025-08, defining uniform terms and characteristics for digital twins of EV batteries.
Setting standards for digital twin technology
The new specification, developed over two and a half years through a collaborative working group led by MHP, aims to standardise terminology and attributes for digital twin models.
Christian Stapel, Partner at MHP, says: “With the DIN SPEC, MHP has once again confirmed its expertise in the field of digital twins and its ability to set up standards on the scale of DIN.”
He notes that the framework facilitates international communication and collaboration among IoT providers, cloud service companies and research institutions, establishing a foundation for future innovations.
Addressing industry needs and enhancing collaboration
Dr Markus Schütten, Senior Manager at MHP, adds: “It all started with the development of a digital twin at an automotive manufacturer. There was a lack of fundamental standardisation.
"With the appropriate competence and expertise, projects of this size can now also be successfully implemented.”
The initiative is not prescriptive about industry-specific or algorithmic requirements, focusing instead on providing a clear, common framework that supports broad usability and adaptability.
AWS level 4 digital twin model
Critical to the new DIN SPEC is AWS’ provision of a preformulated Level 4 digital twin model.
The model enables real-time monitoring and advanced analysis of EV batteries using live vehicle data, fleet insights and AI algorithms.
By leveraging the maturity model, the standard supports battery lifecycle management, predictive maintenance and enhanced operational decision-making.
Benefits for the telecommunications and IoT sectors
Telecom operators and IoT providers are among the key beneficiaries of the DIN SPEC, as it simplifies the setup and standardisation of digital twins in sectors where battery performance is critical.
The ability to categorise digital twins systematically aids regulatory and legal clarity, particularly as electric vehicles and connected devices become ever more integral to telecom infrastructure.
Furthermore, the inclusion of SAE International enables US companies to adopt the specification, with efforts underway to advance the DIN SPEC to an international ISO standard to foster global harmonisation.
Enabling a future of interconnected technologies
The DIN SAE SPEC 91487:2025-08 represents a pivotal step toward interoperable digital twin ecosystems, supporting advancements not only in automotive but in telecommunications, cloud computing and AI-driven analytics.
As digital twins evolve, leading consultancies like MHP provide strategic guidance and reliable expertise to help companies leverage emerging standards effectively.
By championing standardisation, the industry can expect the enhancement of data sharing, better battery reliability and greater efficiency across networks and supply chains, enabling telecom operators to build more resilient and intelligent systems.
The collaboration between MHP and AWS on the DIN SPEC highlights the essential role of standardisation in accelerating technological innovation across sectors.
For telcos, IoT companies and EV manufacturers, the new digital twin framework delivers a unified language and technological foundation to drive future growth, operational excellence and sustainable development in the era of connected mobility.
