Safaricom Ethiopia Begins Fibre Link Between Two Cities

Safaricom Telecommunications Ethiopia has initiated the installation of a critical fibre optic network linking Afdera to Mekelle. The endeavour promises to significantly enhance network resilience and meet escalating data demand in the region. The deployment marks a key milestone in Safaricom Ethiopia’s broader strategy to expand robust digital infrastructure while supporting vulnerable communities.
Launching fibre infrastructure to meet data needs
The fibre installation project was formally launched at a ceremony attended by key officials from the Afar Regional Administration.
“Today marks a significant milestone as we kick off the installation of new fibre infrastructure from Afdera to Mekelle, designed to handle rising data traffic and enhance the quality of our existing network”.
The initiative responds directly to the growing demand for high-capacity connectivity driven by increasing digital adoption in the region.
By improving the network’s backbone, Safaricom Ethiopia aims to ensure greater reliability and capacity, thereby supporting both consumer and enterprise customers who depend on resilient data services.
Community support coupled with infrastructure investment
In parallel with its network expansion, Safaricom Ethiopia continued its commitment to social responsibility by providing emergency relief aid to residents affected by recent flooding in Afdera.
It donated relief supplies, including 1,000 square metres of tenting material, 200 litres of edible oil, 500 kilograms of rice and 500 kilograms of white flour. The contribution was made to assist those impacted by environmental challenges as part of Safaricom’s holistic development approach.
Deputy Commissioner Ali Mohammed commended these efforts, highlighting the vital role of “both improved connectivity and community resilience” in fostering sustainable growth in the Afar region.
Safaricom Ethiopia’s work illustrates its dual focus on digital infrastructure and local community wellbeing, signalling an integrated model for telecommunications companies operating in emerging markets.
Strategic significance for telecommunications stakeholders
For telecommunications industry players, Safaricom Ethiopia’s fibre deployment represents a strategic investment aligned with Ethiopia’s ambitious digital agenda.
The project not only boosts network capacity but demonstrates the importance of leveraging infrastructure rollouts to build social capital and trust within the communities served. Safaricom Ethiopia’s approach reinforces the value of combining technological advancement with corporate social responsibility.
Moreover, the fibre link between Afdera and Mekelle aims to strengthen the overall network architecture, reducing potential bottlenecks and enhancing service quality for business customers reliant on high-speed, stable connectivity.
As data consumption trends rise—Safaricom Ethiopia recently reported average monthly data usage increasing to 6.5GB per user among its 10 million active customers—such infrastructure investments become indispensable.
Commitment to inclusive growth and resilience
Safaricom Ethiopia continues to position itself as a catalyst for inclusive digital growth across the country. The fibre project complements its broader network expansion initiatives, including extensive 4G coverage now reaching over half the population and deployment of thousands of live sites nationwide.
By sustaining investments that bolster network resilience and by engaging in community support, Safaricom Ethiopia highlights its pledge “to serve, enable and support Ethiopia’s development through world-class connectivity and innovation,” as stated by CEO Wim Vanhelleputte.
The recent fibre deployment between Afdera and Mekelle reflects the ongoing commitment, setting a benchmark for telecommunications providers on balancing commercial objectives with social impact in a rapidly digitalising African market.
