Safaricom Ethiopia Begins Fibre Link Between Two Cities

Safaricom Telecommunications Ethiopia has initiated the installation of a critical fibre optic network linking Afdera to Mekelle. The endeavour promises to significantly enhance network resilience and meet escalating data demand in the region. Launching fibre infrastructure to meet data needs

The fibre installation project was formally launched at a ceremony attended by key officials from the Afar Regional Administration.

The initiative responds directly to the growing demand for high-capacity connectivity driven by increasing digital adoption in the region.

By improving the network’s backbone, Safaricom Ethiopia aims to ensure greater reliability and capacity, thereby supporting both consumer and enterprise customers who depend on resilient data services.

In parallel with its network expansion, Safaricom Ethiopia continued its commitment to social responsibility by providing emergency relief aid to residents affected by recent flooding in Afdera.

It donated relief supplies, including 1,000 square metres of tenting material, 200 litres of edible oil, 500 kilograms of rice and 500 kilograms of white flour. The contribution was made to assist those impacted by environmental challenges as part of Safaricom’s holistic development approach.

Deputy Commissioner Ali Mohammed commended these efforts, highlighting the vital role of “both improved connectivity and community resilience” in fostering sustainable growth in the Afar region.
