Swisscom Taps Blue Planet for 100% Assurance Upgrade

Swisscom, Switzerland’s leading ICT provider, has chosen Blue Planet, a division of Ciena, to replace its legacy assurance systems with a unified, AI-ready solution. By deploying Blue Planet’s Unified Assurance and Analytics (UAA) platform, Swisscom is transforming how it manages service performance and fault resolution across multiple domains, beginning with access and transport networks and expanding to mobile backhaul and B2B services.
Shifting to proactive, AI-led assurance
As telecom networks become more dynamic and complex, traditional assurance platforms often lack the agility and scalability required to deliver next-generation services. Recognising this, Swisscom has adopted UAA as a future-proof solution to manage real-time services across its infrastructure proactively.
Thomas Zippo, Product Manager Observability Shared Services at Swisscom, stated: “With our rapid network transformation over the past few years, our legacy service assurance platform could no longer support the more flexible services we plan to deliver to our consumer and enterprise customers.
“Blue Planet’s UAA gives us a modern, cloud-ready assurance solution optimised for managing dynamic services, closed-loop automation and delivering a better customer experience.”
Blue Planet UAA enables Swisscom to move from fragmented, manual OSS processes towards a more predictive and automated model.
By incorporating AI-powered analytics, UAA enhances fault detection, reduces resolution times and provides a comprehensive view of service health across the network.
Enabling end-to-end visibility and operational simplicity
The adoption of UAA allows Swisscom’s network and operations teams to unify fault and performance management into a single platform. The integration enables seamless data correlation across multiple network layers and domains, facilitating faster issue identification and resolution.
Joe Cumello, Senior Vice President and General Manager of Blue Planet, stated: “Traditional Operating Support System (OSS) processes are costly and labour-intensive, and support for legacy options is limited.
“Innovative service providers like Swisscom are driving the shift toward OSS modernisation by embracing AI-led operations. Their goal is to enable seamless, end-to-end service lifecycle automation across increasingly complex, multi-layer, multi-vendor and multi-domain networks.”
With real-time analytics and automated root cause analysis, Swisscom can map network events directly to services and customers, significantly improving operational efficiency and end-user experience.
Building on strategic collaboration
The recent deployment builds on Swisscom’s earlier success with UAA for its data centre networks, extending Blue Planet’s footprint across the operator’s broader infrastructure. It strengthens ongoing collaboration between the two companies, including contributions to the Internet Engineering Task Force (IETF) around integration standardisation in the assurance domain.
As part of the Blue Planet Intelligent Automation portfolio, UAA is a strategic enabler for Swisscom’s network evolution. It supports a long-term vision for service assurance that is not only reactive but prescriptive, anticipating issues before they affect service delivery.
Powering the next phase of network evolution
With more than six million mobile customers and a significant presence in both the Swiss and Italian markets, Swisscom continues to lead the way in network innovation. The operator is recognised globally as one of the most sustainable telecommunications companies and is 51% owned by the Swiss Confederation. Its adoption of UAA reflects a broader digitalisation strategy, agility and customer-centricity.
Through the partnership, Swisscom is establishing a new benchmark for network assurance in the AI era—ensuring operational resilience, enhanced visibility and a superior customer experience.
