The Mobile Economy 2026 report by GSMA highlights how the telco industry is shifting from a connectivity-centric model to one powered by open APIs, AI, advanced digital platforms and 5G standalone.

Speaking at MWC2026 Barcelona, Vivek Badrinath, Director General at GSMA set out three urgent priorities for the years ahead: expanding access to open and inclusive AI, investment in standalone networks and coordinated action across governments and industries to build a more secure digital future for all.

Key facts
  • 8.8 billion: The number of wireless connections that the mobile industry supports.
  • US$11.3tn: The contribution of mobile technologies and services to global GDP by 2030.
  • 90%: Operators that report using multi-layered defence architecture for safeguarding network integrity.
  • Over half: 57% of mobile connections are forecast to be on 5G by 2030.
  • 50 million: The number of jobs that the mobile industry supported in 2025.
  • 45%: Operators who see AI-enabled revenue streams as a strategic priority.

“Last year, mobile connected 5.8 billion people and contributed US$7.6tn to the global economy," said Vivek.

"However, if we want to unlock the full promise of 5G, harness AI responsibly, and protect people from escalating digital threats, we must act with urgency.

"As the industry that connects the world, we have a real responsibility to champion open collaboration across borders to secure networks, close digital gaps and strengthen trust in the digital economy.”
