Telefónica & Blue Planet Enable 93% Faster Service

Telefónica Germany is accelerating its transition to autonomous, cloud-native networks, selecting Blue Planet, a division of Ciena, to support its digital transformation journey.
The partnership marks a significant step forward in Telefónica Germany's 'Network & Operations of the Future' programme, positioning the operator at the forefront of 5G innovation and network automation in Europe.
Enabling dynamic 5G and multi-domain automation
With rapid demand for agile, software-defined networks, Telefónica Germany is modernising its infrastructure with Blue Planet's intelligent automation suite.
The deployment includes Blue Planet Inventory (BPI), Multi-Domain Service Orchestration (MDSO) and 5G Network Slicing. The applications allow Telefónica Germany to gain comprehensive visibility of its network resources and automate the delivery of services across a complex, multi-vendor environment.
By implementing Blue Planet's cloud-native, multi-domain OSS platform, the operator improves operational efficiency, accelerates time-to-market for new services and reduces cost and complexity. These capabilities are essential for unlocking the commercial potential of 5G and supporting advanced offerings like Networks as a Service (NaaS).
Matthias Sauder, Director of Networks at Telefónica Germany, stated: "We are pioneering new, cloud-based networks for the next stage of our digital transformation. This provides the ideal basis for offering our customers a consistently first-class network experience."
Laying the groundwork for autonomous operations
Modernisation is not just about technology adoption but about redefining how networks are designed, deployed and operated.
Telefónica Germany is one of the first operators in Europe to establish a public cloud-based platform for end-to-end network automation. Its introduction of intent-based orchestration across the radio access, transport and core domains highlights its commitment to network autonomy.
Eva Ulicevic, Director of Architecture, Strategy and Analytics at Telefónica Germany, stated: "Blue Planet enables us to manage and orchestrate our network resources across the radio access network, transport and core in real time.
"We are starting the next level of effectiveness in our development and operational processes. The future-proof software platform makes the implementation of new features much faster. Combined with an agile way of working, we were able to receive first deliveries with measurable positive impact on our processes – and this was only a few months after our project started."
Delivering business agility and innovation
Telefónica Germany is leveraging Blue Planet's Cloud Native Platform to build a more agile, service-driven architecture—streamlining service creation, orchestration and lifecycle management.
With support for dynamic 5G slicing and enhanced RAN and transport lifecycle capabilities, the operator is enhancing its fixed and wireless offerings.
"By leveraging 5G advanced features, we have enabled dynamic network slicing and modernised RAN and transport lifecycle management – enhancing both our fixed and wireless business offerings."
As communication service providers (CSPs) prepare for the next wave of digital services, the importance of automation and cloudification continues to rise. By design, the Blue Planet's platform helps CSPs like Telefónica Germany transform into software-driven businesses.
Joe Cumello, Senior Vice President and General Manager at Blue Planet, stated: "Telefónica Germany is taking bold steps to cloudify its network. Blue Planet is playing a key role in making its autonomous network a reality.
"Our Cloud Native Platform and intelligent automation applications serve as the foundation of Telefónica Germany's network operations, helping to simplify end-to-end service management, increase service delivery efficiency and be a launch pad for further innovation."
With more than 45 million mobile and 2.4 million broadband lines, Telefónica Germany is one of Germany's leading integrated telecoms providers. The latest move cements its role in shaping Europe's digital infrastructure and sets a strong example for operators pursuing 5G monetisation through cloud-native automation.
