Teltronic Cuts TETRA Base Station Power Use by 70%

In a significant technological stride, Teltronic, the Spanish telecommunications leader with more than five decades of experience in mission-critical communications, has introduced the GBS (Green Base Station), a new generation TETRA base station that, by design, dramatically reduces energy consumption through the use of AI.
The GBS was officially launched at the Critical Communications World event in Brussels, signalling a forward-thinking shift in sustainable telecom infrastructure.
Machine learning drives power efficiency
At the heart of the GBS is the integration of Machine Learning techniques that intelligently optimise power usage based on real-time traffic and environmental conditions.
By learning from network behaviours and adapting operational parameters dynamically, the GBS can reduce power consumption by up to 70% compared to traditional TETRA base station models.
Marta Fontecha, Teltronic’s Product Marketing Director, stated, “The GBS sets a standard for sustainability in critical communications infrastructure.
"At a time when TETRA technology is already highly mature, Teltronic takes a step further by addressing one of the industry’s most frequent demands: solutions that reduce power consumption and environmental impact.”
Compact, powerful and cost-effective
Despite the significant power savings, there is no compromise on performance. The GBS maintains output power of up to 40W and supports up to four TETRA carriers within a single compact unit.
Its lightweight design reduces the overall infrastructure footprint, lowers installation complexity and eliminates the need for supplementary hardware. It translates into lower capital expenditure and significantly cuts ongoing operational and maintenance costs.
The unit’s high IP65 protection rating allows outdoor deployment without requiring specialised enclosures or controlled environments. Designed for versatility, the GBS can be powered using AC or DC sources and is compatible with solar power, making it well-suited to remote or off-grid locations.
Engineered with security and adaptability in mind
The GBS was conceived, designed and manufactured entirely at Teltronic’s headquarters in Zaragoza, Spain. It meets IEC 62443 cybersecurity requirements in line with global standards, reinforcing its suitability for critical communication deployments where system integrity is paramount.
Leveraging Software Defined Radio (SDR) technology, the GBS replaces many traditional hardware components with software equivalents. It enables flexible, software-based upgrades that minimise the need for on-site intervention.
Expanding radio capacity in the field becomes as straightforward as deploying a software license, ensuring scalability without disrupting existing operations.
Sustainability meets innovation
With environmental considerations at the forefront of infrastructure planning, Teltronic’s GBS represents a critical evolution in TETRA technology. By embedding intelligent energy management into the network’s core, the GBS answers pressing ecological concerns and meets modern communications providers’ operational and economic challenges.
As Teltronic marks half a century in the industry, the launch of the GBS demonstrates its commitment to innovation and sustainability. Its continuing investment in AI-driven solutions reflects a broader shift within telecommunications toward smarter, greener networks designed to meet the demands of a changing world.
