Vodafone: Bringing 5G Network Slicing to Enterprises

Vodafone Business has become the first operator in the UK to deliver commercial 5G network slicing to enterprise customers.
The launch places mobile networks at the core of enterprise connectivity strategies, as organisations look to telco providers for more predictable and controllable performance.
The solution, which Vodafone has named 5G+ Local Slicing, gives businesses access to a dedicated portion of Vodafone’s mobile network.
This ‘slice’ acts as a reserved lane for the customer's data traffic which is designed to maintain performance even when the wider network is congested.
Alongside this, Vodafone Business has introduced Network Boost, a service aimed at improving reliability in high-demand locations across the UK.
Network slicing moves into enterprise use
The move follows the merger of Vodafone and Three, sitting within a wider £11bn (US$14.8bn) investment programme to expand network capability.
It targets 5G Standalone coverage for 99% of the UK population by 2030 and 99.96% by 2034, focusing long-term on infrastructure that supports enterprise-grade services.
Network slicing is a feature of 5G Standalone architecture, where a single physical network is divided into multiple virtual networks, each tailored for a specific use.
The slices can be configured with defined levels of speed, latency and reliability, depending on the needs of the customer.
Until now, most businesses have relied on shared mobile networks, with performance fluctuating depending on demand. For organisations running critical applications, this lack of certainty created operational risk.
Nick Gliddon, Business Director, VodafoneThree, says: “Vodafone Business is first in the UK to make network slicing real for enterprise, and that matters because businesses need more from their mobile connectivity.
“They are processing thousands of transactions, deploying AI, running real-time complex logistics and managing staff communications on mobile networks that were built to be shared, not dedicated.
“Local Slicing changes that, with connectivity that is engineered around the needs of a business. Enterprise customers can now own their network performance, not just hope for it.”
The service is designed for sectors where connectivity underpins operations for sectors including manufacturing, logistics, healthcare, retail and transport.
In these environments, even minor delays or interruptions can disrupt critical workflows, making consistent network behaviour essential.
Performance under pressure
Vodafone Business says 5G+ Local Slicing operates within a defined local area of up to 5km2 where a dedicated portion of network capacity is allocated to a single organisation.
This ensures predictable performance for critical applications such as real-time monitoring and mobile workforce tools.
The slices can be deployed either temporarily or permanently, giving enterprises flexibility in how they use the service.
Additional slices can also be requested by businesses as their requirements change, meaning they can scale their connectivity alongside operational growth.
VodafoneThree trialled deployments at the Coronation of King Charles III, Glastonbury Festival and the Principality Stadium to show how prioritised traffic maintains stability even when tens of thousands of users access the network simultaneously.
These scenarios mirror the high-density conditions often seen in urban business districts and transport hubs.
Mobile Private Networks remain part of the portfolio for organisations that require complete control over their connectivity environment. These are dedicated on-site networks that operate independently of public infrastructure.
Extending reliability with Network Boost
Alongside slicing, Vodafone Business has launched Network Boost, targeting enterprises that operate in areas where network demand is consistently high. The service prioritises business data traffic during periods of congestion, helping maintain application performance.
The introduction of both 5G+ Local Slicing and Network Boost reflects a broader change in how telco providers are approaching enterprise services. Rather than offering uniform connectivity, operators are moving towards tailored network experiences that align with specific business needs.
Vodafone Business’ 5G slicing service marks a shift from best-effort connectivity to defined service levels delivered through the mobile network itself.
