Vodafone & Google enable eSIM for Pixel 9a in one click

Vodafone and Google have taken a significant step in simplifying the mobile device upgrade process for consumers by introducing an innovative eSIM Transfer feature on the new Google Pixel 9a smartphone. The collaboration marks a milestone in Vodafone’s broader strategic relationship with Google, with Germany becoming the first market to offer the new capability.
Launch of eSIM transfer feature in Germany
Vodafone customers in Germany upgrading to the Pixel 9a will be the first to benefit from the enhanced eSIM Transfer functionality from 14 April 2025.
The feature is embedded into the Android setup experience and designed to streamline the migration of either eSIM or physical SIM profiles from previous Pixel devices to the new handset.
The initiative is expected to roll out across other Vodafone markets in Europe in the near future.
One-click migration without QR codes or logins
The eSIM Transfer process was engineered for speed and simplicity. Customers can initiate the transfer over Wi-Fi, eliminating the need for QR codes, manual login processes or creating new eSIM profiles. During the setup of the Pixel 9a, the device can detect a nearby older Pixel smartphone and automatically trigger the transfer sequence with a single click.
The process includes automatically deactivating the SIM or eSIM profile on the previous device, ensuring secure and efficient migration without service interruption.
A first in the industry
Vodafone is the first mobile operator to launch a Google smartphone equipped with the new eSIM Transfer functionality, which supports eSIM profile reuse. The feature, developed based on the GSMA TS.43 industry standard, enables standardised and reliable eSIM migration across devices.
Wolfgang Fettes, Head of Consumer Products & Services at Vodafone Germany, commented, “Vodafone’s partnership with Google means that our customers can experience the seamless eSIM Transfer feature with eSIM profile reuse when they upgrade to the Pixel 9a smartphone. The service is available today in Germany and will be introduced in other European markets in the coming months.”
Post-setup flexibility
In addition to the automatic transfer during initial device setup, Pixel 9a customers can initiate the eSIM or SIM migration later via the device settings. This offers added convenience for those who prefer to configure their new device before completing the transfer.
Moreover, Vodafone customers can convert an existing physical SIM into an eSIM directly from the Pixel 9a settings. Requesting a SIM swap is not required, streamlining the overall transition for users and reducing potential support overheads for Vodafone’s customer service teams.
Strategic collaboration built on innovation
The launch highlights Vodafone's ongoing strategic partnership with Google, which is focused on enhancing the customer experience through technical innovation and improved interoperability between network services and Android devices.
By leveraging shared industry standards and forward-thinking product integration, Vodafone continues to position itself as a leader in digital transformation within the telecommunications space.
As Vodafone extends the availability of the Pixel 9a and eSIM Transfer across Europe, it aims to make seamless mobile transitions a standard expectation for consumers upgrading their devices.
