Why Zain Bahrain & Ericsson are Launching 5G Edge Capability

Zain Bahrain and Ericsson have announced an expansion of their strategic partnership with the introduction of advanced 5G capabilities designed to strengthen the Kingdom of Bahrainâs telecommunications infrastructure and support enterprise digital transformation across multiple sectors.
The collaboration includes the deployment of Ericssonâs Local Packet Gateway solution with Edge User Plane technology across Zain Bahrainâs network.
Growth of the partnership highlights a significant step which will see the enhancement of network performance, resilience and security while supporting Bahrainâs ambitions for a sustainable digital economy and advanced industrial development.
By bringing user plane functions closer to end users, the solution reduces latency and enables more efficient handling of data traffic.
For telecommunications operators, this architectural shift allows greater control over network performance and supports the delivery of tailored services for enterprises and government organisations.
Strengthening network performance at the edge
Edge User Plane technology is designed to optimise how data is processed and routed within a 5G network.
Localising traffic at the network edge improves responsiveness and reliability, particularly for applications that require real time performance.
For Zain Bahrain, the deployment enhances its ability to deliver faster, more secure and resilient connectivity across industries such as manufacturing, logistics, energy and public services.
From a telco perspective, the approach aligns with the transition towards cloud native and distributed network models. It enables operators to support advanced digital services without placing unnecessary strain on centralised network infrastructure, helping to maintain performance as demand grows.
Enabling Industry 4.0 services
The upgraded 5G capability is expected to play a central role in enabling Industry 4.0 technologies across Bahrain.
Ultra-low latency connectivity supports AI-powered predictive maintenance, autonomous systems and real-time monitoring solutions that rely on instant data processing.
For telecommunications providers, this reinforces the strategic importance of 5G in enterprise digitalisation. By enabling mission-critical applications, operators can extend their role beyond connectivity and position themselves as long-term technology partners for industry and government.
Advancing Bahrainâs digital ecosystem
Ammar Al Ketbi, Acting CEO at Zain Bahrain, says: âOur collaboration with Ericsson marks another important milestone in Zain Bahrainâs journey to advance the Kingdomâs digital ecosystem.
âBy introducing latest 5G solutions with Edge User Plane capabilities, we are paving the way for a new era of intelligent connectivity that will empower enterprises and industries to innovate, transform and thrive in the digital age.â
From Ericssonâs perspective, the project demonstrates how advanced 5G architecture can unlock value for operators and customers.
Petra Schirren, President Gulf at Ericsson Europe, Middle East and Africa, says: âOur partnership with Zain Bahrain reflects how the new solutions can drive meaningful transformation across industries.
âThrough the deployment of Ericssonâs Local Packet Gateway solution with Edge User Plane, we are enabling advanced use cases that require near instant connectivity and robust network performance.
âThis partnership highlights Ericssonâs continued commitment to delivering cutting edge network solutions that power the next generation of digital innovation.â
For Bahrainâs telecom sector, the deployment reinforces the role of 5G as critical infrastructure, supporting enterprise services, public sector innovation and long term network evolution as digital demand continues to accelerate nationwide sustainably.
