Cloud & 5G LIVE: T-Systems Explore Gen AI & Sovereign Cloud
Richard’s keynote, Gen AI and Sovereign Clouds: Innovation Versus Control, delves into the evolving role of cloud sovereignty, AI adoption and the challenges enterprises face when balancing agility with regulatory compliance.
The shifting landscape of AI and cloud sovereignty
Reflecting on his presentation from the previous year, Richard notes how rapidly the AI landscape has evolved.
Initially, much of the focus was on consumer-driven AI applications, but now, enterprises are dealing with deeper integration, security concerns and the implications of sovereign cloud solutions.
He highlights how organisations must navigate the transition from traditional data centres to cloud environments while ensuring security and regulatory compliance.
“Generative AI is adding to the complexity of those challenges,” he explains.
Richard also points out that AI maturity within enterprises remains uneven.
While the hype around generative AI (Gen AI) has driven widespread interest, many organisations are still assessing practical applications.
“Less than 10% organisations have a zero-sum sort of control action because we always think that organisations are still subtly assessing,” he states, suggesting that the majority are still in exploratory or pilot stages.
Challenges in AI implementation and cloud strategy
The discussion then turns to the practical concerns of implementing AI-driven solutions.
One key issue is the increasing cost of cloud consumption, which is influencing strategic decisions around AI infrastructure.
Richard explains that organisations are faced with three primary choices:
- Building their own AI models – A costly and resource-intensive approach.
- Leveraging existing foundational models – A more practical option for many enterprises.
- Customising third-party AI models – Allowing companies to fine-tune AI while maintaining some level of control.
The topic of AI agents and software automation also emerges as a key theme.
While AI-powered development tools have shown promise, Richard acknowledges that early implementations faced challenges, particularly in code generation and quality assurance.
However, he believes that AI-driven automation will continue to mature, providing more reliable solutions for enterprises in the coming years.
Sovereign cloud: balancing innovation with control
A significant part of Richard’s keynote focuses on the concept of sovereign clouds - cloud environments designed to meet specific regulatory, security and data sovereignty requirements.
He outlines the core aspects of a sovereign cloud strategy:
- Technology control – Ensuring organisations maintain independence from external cloud providers.
- Operational sovereignty – Defining clear governance over cloud management and operations.
- Data sovereignty – Establishing regulatory compliance and control over data storage, access, and transfer.
Richard notes that sovereign cloud adoption has historically been driven by public sector organisations and highly regulated industries.
However, with increasing concerns over data privacy and AI governance, more enterprises are now considering sovereign cloud solutions.
The future of AI and sovereign cloud strategies
As AI adoption continues to rise, Richard predicts that organisations will need to adopt more nuanced cloud strategies.
He emphasises that sovereign cloud solutions will play a vital role in ensuring security and regulatory compliance, particularly for industries handling sensitive data.
He concludes by encouraging organisations to take a pragmatic approach to AI and cloud transformation, balancing innovation with governance.
