Executives from TELUS and Nokia explored the role of Gen AI in Cloud and 5G at Cloud & 5G LIVE 2025

At Cloud & 5G LIVE, experts from the AI and telecom industries came together to discuss the evolving role of generative AI (Gen AI) in cloud computing and 5G.

Alexandre Guilbault, Head of AI at TELUS joined Rohit Chowdhary, Head of Advanced Consulting Services Europe, MEA and APJ at Nokia Cloud and Network Services at Nokia, to explore how these technologies intersect, the challenges they present and what the future holds.

The intersection of Gen AI, cloud, and 5G

The discussion opens with a key question: what excites industry leaders about the convergence of Gen AI, cloud computing and 5G? Alexandre highlights the importance of edge computing integration, explaining that as AI models grow in size and complexity, reducing latency becomes essential.

“I think the most interesting thing will be edge computing integration. Because the main driver for 5G versus the other previous technologies is the ultra low latency that is, giving to this network. And while we're building bigger and bigger, generally V AI models, they take more time to process. So we're trying to minimise latency as much as possible.” says Alexandre.

Rohit adds that the simultaneous evolution of AI, cloud and 5G has brought new possibilities, stating: “There is growth happening in all these three-digit trajectories, each technology is evolving.

“But in a way, they are also now going to fit very well in a jigsaw puzzle. And they're going to make it happen. The real use case for the industry is looking forward. So I think the excitement is increasing because on one side, 5G is as Alex said, is, you know, bringing this ultra low latency and the cloud is bringing scalability."

He adds: “But I think the AI and AI is is making the intelligence happen so that the the real use cases, the decision making in real time is going to become more real and, and we can exploit all the three technologies together.”

Transforming industries with Gen AI

Gen AI is already making an impact across various industries, but its role in telecoms, healthcare, and smart cities is particularly transformative.

Rohit, speaking from a telco perspective, emphasises that connectivity is no longer the primary revenue driver.

“In coming 3 to 4 years, I think the connectivity will only be less than 30% of your overall revenue. So the 30% of the revenue will come from digitalisation. Now, when you think about that, you really need to find your space in that digital digital transformation world.”

The healthcare industry is also seeing major benefits. Remote diagnostics and AI-driven healthcare solutions are becoming more feasible thanks to 5G’s high-speed data transfer. Gen AI enables real-time health monitoring, personalised treatments and enhanced diagnostics, particularly in areas where access to healthcare is limited.

Smart cities stand to gain significantly as well. AI-driven traffic management, energy efficiency improvements and surveillance enhancements rely on high-speed data processing and real-time decision-making, which Gen AI can facilitate when deployed over 5G networks.

Challenges in deploying Gen AI

Despite its potential, deploying Gen AI in 5G environments presents several challenges.

Alexandre identifies latency management as a key issue, particularly when balancing computational power with response times.

“I will need to work with more advanced models, more advanced architectures, like a mixture of experts, model partitioning and dynamic cluster learning. We should be able to route the request to a bigger model or try to tackle that at the edge with smaller models.”

Data complexity is another major hurdle.

In industries such as telecoms, data is often fragmented across multiple layers and legacy systems, making it difficult to integrate AI effectively.

Alexandre stresses the importance of data consolidation and governance, saying:

“I think it's about data. Gen AI can take that structured document and text and understand reason up on it and take information based on it.

“If your company has everything in the expert's mind, then I will be able to learn from those experts.

“It needs to look at the data itself and get to know your business to be able to do the advanced things that are coming, like agenetic AI.”

Looking ahead: the future of AI, 5G, and cloud

The discussion concludes with insights into emerging AI advancements that will further transform industries. Among them:

  • AI-driven automation: Future AI models will not only generate responses but also execute tasks, such as scheduling meetings, managing workflows and making real-time decisions.
  • AI at the edge: With the rise of 5G slicing and edge computing, AI models will process more data locally, enabling ultra-fast, real-time analytics.
  • Quantum computing: While still in its early stages, quantum computing could significantly enhance AI’s capabilities, making it possible to process vast amounts of data at unprecedented speeds.

With AI, 5G and cloud computing continuing to evolve at a rapid pace, it’s clear that businesses must embrace these changes strategically.

As the discussion at Cloud & 5G LIVE highlights, those who adapt early will be well-positioned to lead in this new digital era.
