Trend Micro: Combatting AI-Powered Mobile Scams

Smartphones have become the cornerstone of our digital lives, particularly as artificial intelligence (AI) capabilities are expanding across the global business landscape. However, as technology continues to advance, so does the cyber threat landscape.

In response, leading cybersecurity firm Trend Micro has launched an innovative solution designed to secure mobile devices from AI-generated deceptions and scams.

Called Trend Micro Check, it is a multi-featured mobile app that harnesses the power of AI to help consumers identify potential scams and emerging AI threats such as deepfakes. 

“Scams are at the top of the list of online threats to consumers, and AI has made it easy for cybercriminals to scam innocent people,” explains Eva Chen, CEO at Trend Micro.

Confronting the threat of AI

The Trend Micro Check app offers a comprehensive suite of features, including an AI-powered Scam Check tool for real-time assessment of potentially fraudulent content, a Deepfake Scan to identify AI "face-swapping" attempts during live video calls, and an SMS Filter to automatically screen out spam and scam text messages.

"We are leading the race against these threats and working tirelessly to stay ahead of them with our own AI capabilities," Chen explains, highlighting Trend Micro's proactive approach to cybersecurity.

A survey completed by Trend Micro revealed that 73% of respondents believe the volume and risk of online scams have worsened over the past year, with 79% expressing concern about a family member potentially falling victim to an online scam.

As AI technology continues to evolve, so too will the tactics employed by scammers. The launch of Trend Micro Check represents a significant step forward in the ongoing battle against mobile scams, leveraging AI to protect consumers from AI-enhanced threats.
