AI chatbots have been revolutionary for the modern world. Not only do they save customers and agents time, but they can also quickly assist with basic customer inquiries, solve simple problems and collect and share information.

Within the telco industry alone, chatbots have been vital for businesses to speed up simple processes, which frees their workers up for more complex tasks. They can also work to reduce costs and improve the quality of service.

The following is a list of the most popular AI chatbot apps available on Android, iOS and web platforms. They are ranked roughly by total downloads.

10. Talkie AI

Talkie AI emerged as a popular app in 2023, particularly for those interested in AI character chats. It saw roughly 27.9 million downloads in 2024 and by January 2025 boasted about 32.8 million monthly active users worldwide. 

It has climbed into the top charts for social and entertainment categories in app stores and its rapid growth can be attributed to the interest in creating personalised AI companions. Currently, the app is most popular in the US and is rapidly growing across Asia.

Ask AI surged in popularity in 2023, achieving more than 10 million downloads on both Google Play and the Apple App Store. By some estimates, it had around 28 million monthly active users worldwide in late 2024, putting it on par with its competitors. 

The app continues to boast a high rating in app stores and features a GPT-4-powered chatbot assistant with a broad range of capabilities. Ask AI can handle typical queries and answers questions, explains concepts, translates and can assist with code.

8. Character.AI

Developer: Character AI, Inc. (Character Technologies)

Character.AI initially started as a web platform that was launched in 2022, before being introduced to mobile apps in mid-2023. According to recent research, the chatbot has 28.75 million monthly active users worldwide.

Users can create an AI companion and chat with multiple characters and have open-ended conversations. The platform focuses on entertainment and creativity and is most popular on the web, but its app numbers are continuing to grow.

7. Nova

Nova is another extremely popular chatbot that is powered by ChatGPT. It saw about 31.7 million downloads in 2024 and, as of early 2025, its total installs are expected to exceed more than 40 million across platforms. It is designed to enable users to find information and get answers to their questions through an intuitive, human-like interaction on NOVA’s websites.

The chatbot distinguishes itself by offering access to multiple AI models and is built on the latest AI technologies. This means that the app can generate responses using OpenAI’s models and switch to other AI engines like Gemini or Claude for various tasks.

6. ChatOn

ChatOn is one of the more successful third-party AI chatbot apps, having been downloaded more than 50 million times across iOS and Android. As of February 2025, AIBY announced that the app had surpassed 55 million total downloads. 

The chatbot is a general AI chat assistant powered by GPT-4 and other models and is designed to answer questions, brainstorm ideas and help with writing tasks. It offers a range of conversational prompts and templates for different needs.

Some users state that the app’s responses are quite similar to ChatGPT.

5. Doubao

Doubao is one of the most popular AI chatbot apps in the People’s Republic of China. First launched in 2023, it had nearly 60 million monthly active users by November 2024. It was among the top three most downloaded AI apps worldwide in 2024, alongside ChatGPT and Google’s Gemini.

The chatbot can handle text, image and audio inputs and outputs, with users able to chat conversationally, ask specific questions for knowledge or creative content and can also generate images or audio.

4. Gemini AI

Originally launched in 2023 as Bard, the Google Gemini app became a popular alternative chatbot, receiving more than 81.5 million downloads in 2024. The technology giant positioned Gemini 2.0 in December 2024 as a step towards creating a ‘universal assistant’ and offers multimodal capabilities across text, video, images and code.

The platform integrates seamlessly with Google’s ecosystem, offering features like Deep Research for advanced reasoning and long-context analysis. While the base version is free, Gemini Advanced provides access to more sophisticated models for complex tasks like coding and research analysis.

3. DeepSeek

Having hit the headlines earlier this year, DeepSeek has fast-become one of the most popular AI chatbots worldwide. As of January 2025, the chatbot boasts 33.7 million monthly active users globally and sparked tumult in US markets after revealing technology that it says rivals Silicon Valley’s offerings at a fraction of the cost.

DeepSeek was launched in Hangzhou, China by hedge fund manager Liang Wenfeng, who claimed its R1 model can match or outperform systems from established players, while costing under US$6m to develop.

2. Microsoft Copilot

Microsoft Copilot can be used for a range of business use cases

Tech giant Microsoft is a key example of a company that has integrated Gen AI into its suite of products. Microsoft Copilot is designed to assist users in creating documents, presentations and emails. The tool also helps to improve productivity for users and allows them to focus on tasks that are at a higher level.

Its AI chatbot quickly gained traction and saw a surge of new users as a result of creating a mobile app for Microsoft 365 Copilot. Throughout 2024, users of Copilot sat between 20 and 30 million users.

Created by OpenAI, ChatGPT remains the most popular AI chatbot worldwide, surpassing more than 250 million mobile app installs between 2023 and 2024. As of January 2025, it has roughly 349.41 million monthly active users.

ChatGPT sparked the revolution of modern AI as we understand it today. The official app supports general queries and content generation, in addition to speech-to-text, voice replies, image-based queries and has the ability to sync chat history across devices.

According to Sensor Tower, ChatGPT accounted for 53% of global AI app downloads.
