An AI smartphone is a phone that uses AI in some of its features, which can incorporate machine learning and large language models (LLMs), with in-build AI, AI that is outsourced to the cloud, or a mix of both.

The technology has already redefined the mobile market, with its ability to enhance a range of aspects of the global user experience. Voice assistants like Siri or Google Assistant are able to leverage AI for natural language processing (NLP) and enable users to interact via voice command - thereby making phone interactions more seamless and accessible.

The Oppo Find N3 is designed for users who appreciate a foldable phone, which also has enhanced AI functionalities. Its AI offerings are designed to enhance user interactions, including adaptive UI adjustments based on how the device is being used.

Likewise, its camera performance has been enhanced with AI that supports image stabilisation and scene detection, which leads to a higher picture quality. 

The phone is designed with a flexible hinge that not only enables greater functionality, but also helps to cool and reduce the temperature of the device.

Designed with AI to offer a faster and smarter mobile experience, the OnePlus 13 is powered with the new Snapdragon 8 Elite platform to boost memory bandwidth, gaming and entertainment experiences.

Only released this year, it boasts features such as Hasselblad camera tuning and an AI-powered camera feature for better picture taking and colour calibration.

8. Apple iPhone 16 Pro

Described by Apple as the first iPhone built for Apple Intelligence, the 16 Pro has been designed for a Grade 5 titanium design - which makes the phone both strong and lightweight.

Offered in a range of colours as a result of its design, the iPhone also has a range of internal design improvements, including a 100% recycled aluminium thermal substructure and heat dissipation technology.

Built for Apple Intelligence, the iPhone offers stronger privacy protections and a personal intelligence system to help the user with tasks.

The phone has been reported to have a slightly shorter battery life, but works very similarly to the iPhone 16 Pro Max (see entry 2 on this list).

7. Samsung Galaxy S24+

The S24+ has a broad range of AI features, including enhanced capabilities for photography. The phone contains Galaxy AI and includes skills such as Circle to Search, Live Translate, Note Assist and Photo Assist. It also boasts more RAM than the standard S24, which enables faster AI.

Other features include a live translate function, an Always On display and Chat Assist capabilities. 

6. Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 6

The Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 6 offers impressive AI features in a lighter and thinner design, in addition to durability improvements. Its foldable design enables the user to multi-task with two screens, or engage with a more immersive experience when gaming for example.

According to reviews upon its release, it feels light and has less of a noticeable crease when unfolded. 

Harnessing Galaxy AI, the phone has all of the typical AI capabilities as Samsung’s other AI-enabled phones. 

5. Google Pixel 9 Pro Fold

Another foldable phone, the Google Pixel 9 Pro Fold has Google’s Gemini technology onboarded to act as a natural AI voice assistant. As a result of being able to fold, the phone is one of the more versatile handsets and has an eight inch screen when unfolded which showcases its AI capabilities. 

The device features a cutting-edge design, a powerful processor and a powerful camera system that harnesses AI with the aim of creating a better user experience.

4. Xiaomi 14 Ultra

Xiaomi’s latest flagship phone has some of the best photography hardware, with the technology including image stabilisation. Its Leica-powered camera system is able to deliver high-resolution photos in tough lighting conditions - although some reviews say the device is a bit heavy.

As part of its plans to incorporate AI, Xiaomi has included AI-generated subtitles for video calls, object eraser and sky replacement tools, in addition to tools like audio transcription, voice translation and note summaries. 

3. Google Pixel 9 Pro XL

Google’s Pixel 9 Pro XL represents the pinnacle of Google's AI-first smartphone approach. Released in late 2024, it features the Tensor G4 chip specifically designed for on-device AI processing. As a result, the device excels at computational photography with enhanced low-light capabilities and AI-powered editing tools. 

Likewise, it has Google’s Gemini AI assistant integrated, which offers context-aware responses, boosting speech recognition for real-time translations and transcriptions. 

Its AI capabilities also extend to enhanced call screening, personalised content recommendations and intelligent notification filtering based on user behaviour patterns.

The Apple iPhone 16 Pro Max showcases Apple's most sophisticated AI integration to date. Launched in September 2024, it features the A18 Pro chip with a dedicated neural engine specifically optimised for Apple Intelligence. 

It is more powerful than the 16 Pro and has on-device AI processing for enhanced privacy and impressive photography capabilities. By integrating Gen AI, the device permits intelligent photo editing and real-time language translation. 

Additionally, the personal assistant within the phone has been revamped with more natural conversations and proactive task management.

The Galaxy S25 Ultra is designed by Samsung to be a ‘true AI companion’ that is set to make everything more personalised and intuitive. Released just last month, it features the Snapdragon 8 processor which is dedicated to optimising AI for a range of tasks.

One of the device’s key features is its photography capabilities, with AI scene recognition and real-time image processing. Likewise, Samsung has improved its Galaxy AI suite to be integrated throughout the interface, which offers tools like predictive text, automated task completion and natural language interactions. 

Notably, the S25 Ultra also offers enhanced real-time translation, transcription capabilities and AI-powered battery optimisation. 

Samsung's critical focus on interconnectivity allows the AI to seamlessly manage experiences across multiple Galaxy devices while maintaining robust security through on-device processing of sensitive information.
