Digital Realty and Vodafone Greece partner to boost Crete’s connectivity, linking subsea cables and data infrastructure for telecom growth in Southern Euro

Digital Realty, a leading global data centre provider, has announced a strategic collaboration with Vodafone Greece to strengthen Crete’s digital infrastructure and connectivity capabilities. The alliance represents a key milestone in positioning the island as a rising connectivity hub in the Mediterranean region, particularly for telecommunications operators, cloud providers and digital service businesses across Europe, the Middle East and Africa.

As part of the partnership, Vodafone Greece will establish a point of presence (PoP) at Digital Realty’s new HER1 facility in Heraklion, the island’s first carrier-neutral data centre with interconnection to all existing and planned subsea cable landing stations in Crete.

The HER1 site will host submarine line terminating equipment (SLTE) for multiple customers, forming a crucial component of the island’s growing connectivity ecosystem.

“This collaboration with Vodafone Greece marks a transformative moment for Crete’s digital infrastructure,” said Alexandros Bechrakis, Managing Director of Digital Realty in Greece.

Enhancing backhaul resilience and capacity

Vodafone Greece will deliver a robust dual-route terrestrial fibre solution between HER1 and its cable landing station in Tympaki, located in southern Crete. The dual-path configuration will increase both bandwidth capacity and network resilience, offering critical backhaul for major subsea cables entering the island.

The strategic placement and enhanced connectivity will benefit a range of telecoms and infrastructure providers, including global cloud platforms, internet service providers (ISPs), content delivery networks (CDNs) and carriers.

In addition, the partnership will augment existing Vodafone Greece services between Crete and Athens, leveraging Chania in the west and Sitia in the east to provide redundancy and resilience on both a national and local scale.

“Combining our infrastructure in the area with Digital Realty’s, it is certain that we will build something truly impactful,” said Nikos Plevris, Chief Network Officer at Vodafone Greece.

“We are looking forward to seeing the results of this collaboration.”

Creating a digital gateway to Southern Europe

Digital Realty’s HER1 is part of a broader initiative to bridge connectivity gaps across Southern Europe. By design, the facility serves as a regional gateway, interconnecting international, regional and local subsea cables. It plays a pivotal role in enhancing digital infrastructure throughout the EMEA region.

The site aligns with Europe’s growing demand for robust data infrastructure, particularly in light of the European Union’s US$234bn AI infrastructure investment programme announced earlier this year. Data centre operators are under pressure to deliver capacity at scale while meeting increasingly complex power and cooling requirements.

“Our HER1 data centre is designed to establish Crete as a strategic digital hub, which needs close collaboration with local, regional and global partners,” said Bechrakis.

“By supporting critical landing cables and enhancing regional connectivity, we’re reinforcing Crete’s position as a gateway to Southern Europe and beyond.”

Strengthening Greece’s position in the global digital economy

Vodafone Greece’s involvement in interconnecting some of the world’s largest subsea fibre optic cables via its Tympaki cable landing station further underscores the country’s expanding role in the international digital economy.

“Our partnership with Digital Realty is another critical step in what we have managed to implement through the construction and operation of our submarine cable landing station in Tympaki,” said Plevris.

“We connect the country with the rest of the world, bolstering Greece’s digital economy and offering new opportunities for our communities, partners and the entire country.”

The partnership represents more than just an infrastructure investment; it highlights a broader trend in Europe’s telecoms and digital services sectors: demand for low-latency, high-redundancy regional hubs capable of serving next-generation applications, from AI to autonomous networks.

By aligning with key players like Vodafone Greece, Digital Realty is helping to deliver future-proof digital ecosystems that will support innovation and growth across the region.
