Southern Company, a trusted provider of energy solutions to over nine million customers across the southeastern United States, has made two high-profile leadership appointments aimed at strengthening its telecommunications and fibre network operations.

The strategic moves reinforce its ongoing focus on digital innovation, regulatory resilience and customer-centric growth in a rapidly evolving energy and connectivity landscape.

John M. Turner, Jr. has been elected an independent director of Southern Company, effective Sept. 1, 2025

John M. Turner, Jr., Chairman, President and CEO of Regions Financial Corporation, will join Southern Company’s Board of Directors as an independent director on 1 September 2025.

With more than four decades of experience in the financial services industry, John brings extensive expertise in regulated markets, banking leadership and customer-centric strategy.

“John shares our values around affordability, integrity and service excellence,” said Chris Womack, Chairman, President and CEO of Southern Company. “His extensive financial expertise and understanding of the communities we serve will be instrumental as we address growth opportunities in an increasingly digital and customer-demand-driven energy market.”

John currently leads Regions Financial Corporation, a US$159bn financial institution and the second-largest publicly traded company headquartered in Alabama.

His leadership has been defined by innovation, community engagement and a strategic outlook, qualities that align closely with Southern Company’s vision for transforming energy into long-term economic, social and environmental progress.

Having joined Regions in 2011, John advanced through executive ranks, from leading regional banking operations to becoming CEO in 2018.

His prior executive roles at Whitney National Bank and AmSouth Bank further reflect a career built on operational excellence and stakeholder value. John further contributes his expertise to several boards, including the Economic Development Partnership of Alabama and United Way of Central Alabama and serves as a trustee of the University of Georgia Foundation.
