Rising international travel and connectivity demand drive eSIM market expansion as operators and technology providers widen coverage and service access

The travel eSIM market is projected to reach US$3.08bn by 2032, rising from US$1.46bn in 2024, according to research by DataM Intelligence. The market is expected to grow at a compound annual growth rate of 9.8% over the forecast period from 2025 to 2032.

The growth aligns with the recovery in global tourism. Data from the UN Tourism agency shows that international tourist arrivals in 2024 reached 1.4 billion, marking a 99% rebound compared with pre-pandemic levels and an 11% increase from 2023.

The United States recorded 72.4 million international visitors, equivalent to 91% of 2019 levels.

Asia and the Pacific reached 316 million international arrivals in 2024, or 87% of 2019 figures. The Middle East reported a 32% increase over 2019, with Africa growing by 7% and Europe by 1%, reflecting strong intraregional travel patterns.

Central and Eastern Europe remained below previous levels due to the conflict in Ukraine.

Vodafone and SimCorner strengthen eSIM offerings

Telecom and digital connectivity providers are expanding their service portfolios to address rising demand from international travellers. In May 2025, SimCorner introduced new unlimited-data travel eSIM plans for Europe, covering more than 35 countries and available for periods of 5 to 30 days.

These plans target tourists, digital nomads and business travellers who want roaming services without using physical SIM cards.

In June 2025, Vodafone introduced a global digital travel platform that provides mobile data eSIMs across more than 200 countries.

The Vodafone Travel app connects to over 700 partner networks and is available to both Vodafone and non-Vodafone users, giving travellers on-demand access to data plans through one interface.

Vodafone CEO Margherita Della Valle describes the service as “a digital platform designed to make travel simpler, offering easy access to connectivity in more than 200 countries,” adding that the Vodafone Travel eSIM is positioned to become “the preferred international data solution for mobile users worldwide".

These developments show a clear focus on widening network coverage and simplifying how users access travel connectivity. By removing the requirement for physical SIM cards, operators lower entry barriers for travellers who need data services across multiple regions.

du expands Travel eSIM access across 190 countries

In March 2025, Dubai-based telecom provider du introduces its Travel eSIM for passengers transiting through UAE airports. The plan includes connectivity across more than 190 countries, beginning with a free eSIM and offering customisable data bundles.

The operator states that the offer supports international mobility for short-term travellers while simplifying user onboarding.

The approach responds to the demand for short-duration and affordable roaming solutions.

It further demonstrates how regional telecoms are adapting their services for transient travellers who seek immediate activation and local-rate data options.

Rising demand for seamless mobile connectivity

The increasing demand for seamless connectivity accompanies a strong rebound in international travel through 2024 and 2025.

Market data shows that major destinations are nearing or surpassing pre-pandemic volumes. Japan recorded more than 25 million inbound visitors in 2024, nearly 96% of its 2019 level.

India’s outbound travel exceeded 27 million departures, surpassing pre-COVID levels. South Korea reached 110% of 2019 arrivals, while Australia approached 90%. Other destinations reported substantial increases, including Qatar, up 137% above 2019 levels; El Salvador, up 81%; Albania, up 80%; and Saudi Arabia, up 69%.

These figures align with the rapid adoption of eSIM technology. Europe reports an 78% eSIM adoption rate, highlighting the region’s prioritisation of seamless data access for travellers.

The integration of eSIMs into mainstream mobile infrastructure enables users to activate plans digitally, supporting on-demand data services across borders.

BICS survey highlights consumer awareness gap

Consumer behaviour continues to shape how providers approach the market. A BICS survey of more than 2,100 UK adults indicates that 56% would consider using an eSIM for travel purposes, while 10% already use one.

About 40% state they would purchase a travel eSIM from non-traditional sources such as supermarkets or airlines. However, 40% of respondents have not heard of eSIMs and 41% remain unsure if their device supports the feature.

These findings point to clear opportunities for targeted education and marketing to raise awareness of eSIMs and support wider uptake.

Many consumers, especially millennials and Gen Z travellers, focus on convenience and self-service when choosing how to stay connected.

Their preference for short-term or regional eSIM packages, rather than long-term contracts, reflects a shift in how mobile data is used while travelling.

Milind Pathak, Chief Corporate Marketing Officer, Proximus Global, supports these findings: “Our research shows the growing consumer appetite for travel eSIMs, but highlights a significant awareness gap."

"Many consumers are unaware that their devices support eSIM, presenting an opportunity for brands to educate and simplify adoption. Those who move early will be best placed to capture this demand and establish themselves in the market,” adds Milind.

As the market develops, providers continue to introduce plans across multiple geographies with simplified onboarding.

The combined influence of tourism recovery, eSIM compatibility across devices and operator investment in cross-border coverage supports the travel eSIM market’s current expansion path.
