BT introduces a new digital sovereignty platform to support the UK public and private sectors with sovereign data, cloud and AI solutions

BT has announced the launch of a sovereign platform to deliver a suite of digital sovereignty services for the UK private and public sectors. The development forms part of the company’s strategy to strengthen control of operations, systems and data within UK infrastructure, using UK-based staff where required.

The initiative seeks to address the growing importance of digital sovereignty as organisations adapt to geopolitical shifts.

By ensuring operations are supported exclusively by UK systems and personnel, BT aims to meet customer requirements for heightened resilience and compliance.

Jon James, CEO of BT Business

Jon James, CEO of BT Business, says: “Sovereignty isn’t simply a matter of compliance or risk management – it’s key to unleashing the potential of AI, and ensuring resilient operations in an increasingly uncertain world.

"Our pioneering launch reflects BT’s unique position as the digital backbone of the UK, and the only provider with the scale, capabilities and experience to enable true UK sovereign solutions.”

New BT platform supports UK-based infrastructure

The sovereign platform builds on BT’s existing network infrastructure and expertise supporting critical national operations. BT has longstanding experience delivering secure, sovereign services across both public and private sectors, positioning the company to extend these capabilities into new domains.

It is enhancing its customer offering by introducing a range of new solutions through the platform, supported by UK-based systems and data management processes.

Organisations are increasingly looking for sovereignty in their services and it’s up to us to make sure we deliver for our customers.

That means making sure we’re offering the right sovereign solutions that ensure data and operations remain secure, compliant, resilient and future-proofed.

Jon James, CEO of BT Business

The infrastructure, according to BT, by design, allows organisations to maintain complete control of sensitive data and operations within national boundaries.

BT Business expands portfolio with sovereign options

BT Business plans to introduce sovereign options across its existing product portfolio in the first half of 2026. It will include core services for voice, cloud and artificial intelligence, enabling customers to choose the level of sovereignty that best meets their regulatory, operational or strategic needs.

The sovereign platform will support the rollout of new service categories in the coming months, using BT’s digital infrastructure as a foundation.

BT states that the approach intends to facilitate the controlled integration of emerging technologies while maintaining data security and regulatory compliance under UK governance.

The platform aligns with BT’s broader digital infrastructure strategy, which focuses on providing flexible and resilient connectivity to support national and enterprise-level operations.

BT supports the UK Government’s AI sovereignty goals

BT’s investment coincides with the UK Government’s focus on AI sovereignty.

The government’s AI Opportunities Action Plan outlines objectives to strengthen AI development, expand data centre capacity and secure national governance over critical digital assets.

BT contributes to this direction by participating as a founding member of the UK Sovereign AI Industry Forum. The initiative brings together leading organisations to promote sovereign AI infrastructure and standards.

It further supports the UK Government’s AI skills development programme, which aims to grow technical capability within the workforce to meet future demands.

Through the partnerships, BT aligns its sovereign platform with the UK’s broader ambitions to develop a secure foundation for artificial intelligence, ensuring that innovation and data management remain under domestic control.
