Telco Markets: Vodacom & Google Cloud Focus AI to Africa

Vodacom Group announces a new multi-year strategic collaboration with Google Cloud, aiming to accelerate the rollout of AI and advanced data analytics across its operations in Africa.
The agreement will see Vodacom leverage Google Cloudâs scalable infrastructure and AI tools to modernise its platforms, improve operational efficiency and deliver new services to consumers across the continent.
The project focuses on the use of generative AI models, including Gemini, Imagen and Veo, as well as Google Cloudâs data platforms such as BigQuery.
These tools will be deployed to unify Vodacomâs data assets and introduce large-scale intelligent services tailored to the specific needs of African customers. For telcos, this points to a broader trend of generative AI being integrated into core business systems at network level.
Shameel Joosub, CEO of Vodacom, says: âThis collaboration is more than a technology upgrade; it is a deep commitment to Africa's digital revolution.
âIntegrating Google Cloud's data and AI solutions into our business will modernise our infrastructure and fundamentally shift our operational paradigm.
âThis collaboration is essential for us to build and deploy solutions that address the unique challenges and opportunities of the continent, ensuring the transformative power of AI is accessible to millions of customers and businesses across Africa.â
Migrating data and powering intelligent networks
The first pillar of the collaboration involves the full migration and consolidation of Vodacomâs key data platforms onto Google Cloud infrastructure.
It includes the adoption of BigQuery, a cloud-native data warehouse platform that allows organisations to process and analyse data at scale. For Vodacom, it provides a unified environment that enables real-time data access and better governance.
By establishing a centralised source of business data, the company can make faster and more informed decisions, while creating a launchpad for large-scale AI deployments. For telcos, this shift marks a continued move away from fragmented on-premises storage to integrated cloud ecosystems capable of supporting low-latency services and automation.
The agreement also includes the use of Google Cloudâs Vertex AI platform, which provides the tools needed to build, deploy and manage machine learning models. As a result, it will support a range of AI-driven capabilities such as predictive network management, personalised customer service and fraud detection.
Accelerating AI in consumer services
A key focus of the partnership is making AI services available at scale across African markets.
Vodacom plans to integrate generative AI across its mobile and enterprise offerings, including tools that enhance customer support with intelligent personalisation.
AI will also play a role in automating internal processes, optimising mobile networks and detecting fraudulent activity in real time.
From a telco perspective, the introduction of AI across both customer-facing and operational layers demonstrates how machine learning models can be embedded within existing infrastructure to enable smarter, more resilient networks.
In markets where customer needs vary widely, this creates space for more agile service delivery.
Maureen Costello, Vice President, UKI and SSA, Google Cloud, says: âGoogle Cloud is proud to support Vodacom in accelerating AI across Africa.
âBy providing access to our most advanced generative AI models from Gemini and our leading data infrastructure, we are supporting Vodacom's ambitious vision to build technology solutions that improve the lives of Africans.â
Fintech, enterprise and education innovation
The third pillar of the agreement focuses on the development of new products and services designed specifically for African users. It includes the launch of AI-powered fintech tools to promote financial inclusion, enterprise services for local businesses and digital content platforms to support education and training.
The product strategy reflects a demand among African consumers for more accessible digital services.
By combining telco-grade network infrastructure with Googleâs AI models, Vodacom aims to deliver use cases that are commercially viable and socially relevant.
The collaboration builds on the existing relationship between Vodacomâs parent company, Vodafone and Google Cloud.
For telcos operating in similar markets, it sets a clear direction: generative AI and cloud-native infrastructure are becoming essential to deliver regional-scale innovation, particularly where infrastructure gaps and resource constraints remain a challenge.
